Info centre

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Info centre

Post by travelman » Mon Nov 13, 2017 4:06 pm

My info centre stopped working a short while ago.I have a 1991 ES which I have had for 24 years so it has not done too bad.I changed it for one off of a 1993 standard 2 litre which was 100% working when I took it out. However,in my car it shows nothing. The speedo and rev counter work ok and the info centre lights up but remains blank.I have since been told that an info centre from a 2 litre will not work in a standard ES-is this correct?
If it is correct my original one may be a job for Brinkie!
I have checked the connections, earths, etc mentioned on various pages, but all to no avail.
Comments appreciated.

^^ exactly what this man said.

I suspect all infocentres just have a desire to visit their country of birth; It's like a pilgrimage for them!

:D - they are like salmon - to an extent. They get to an age when they cannot resist the instinctive call to return to where they came from. No offence intended to Brinkie's amazing abilities to repair them, but if only they then produced a growing new generation of nice brand new info centres when they got there!

Info centre computers haven't changed since 1991 so it should be fully compatible if you have taken one of a 1993, however, you could be looking at a dead computer because they seem to die for no reason. If you still have the old instrument panel, please try and swap the computer (under the little white cover, 3 screws, simply unplug from the 1991 and plug it into the 1993)

What I think is a permanent solution is sending the 1991 instrument cluster to me and having it fully refurbished. You could also send both clusters so I can make one good instrument cluster out of two and give you a discount if I can keep the 1993 cluster for spare parts.

On a side note:
The info centre in my dad's 480 (a 1995 2 litre) stops working now and then, I have taken out the instrument cluster many times but every time it seems a bad connection (not the soldering but the plug itself) causing the failure. I suspect it is moisture, and as we speak the windscreen is taken out for rust repairs and subsequent re-fitting and re-sealing, so we might have tackled that problem.

Huh - typical 480 component - can't even make a pilgrimage back to the right country... ;)
