Cheers mate!
You’re very welcome my friend!!! I’m looking very forward to getting the car MOT tested Saturday so I should be able to start using it and get some more pictures on here! :D

Hi forum mates. I also have intermittent speedometer issues on my '93 volvo 480 (speedo and odometer both won't work). It works for a day in the morning and latter that same say I won't work anymore. Then it won't work for weeks again... . It seems if it's colder outside the probability to work are higher but it might be just a coincidence because the cars always lived in the garage. Could you provide photos and instructions of how to find the connector you're talking?

Remove the airbox and you'll see it.

I'll try and gran a picture tomorrow whilst there's light

Could also be dry joints on the cluster itself, fortunately we have a thread for that: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=35684

Jeff, if you could post the photo of the cable/connector in the cluster repair thread for reference purposes as well I would be much obliged - I did mean to put one there myself when I wrote it but never got around to it...

Hi there my speedo issue is, the needle won't go past 40mph. Took the clocks apart done some resoldering but nothing looked a miss put all back still the same. Info centre works but gives very low average speed reading like 15mph and very poor fuel economy like 25mpg. Mines a 1.7 es auto where will the speed sensor be? Many thanks

The speed sensor is in the gearbox. From what I've read on here, the problem you are most likely having (if you've eliminated the cluster) is the wiring, not the sensor itself. I believe Brinkie's recommendation is to reterminate the end. Have you read his posts on this matter?

Be careful taking the sensor out unnecessarily, you might break it! Then you'll be up shit creek. There's not much that you can do with the gearbox end.‎

After reading this thread this morning I separated the the plug and socket measured the resistance of the sensor approx 2ohms. Cleaned the contacts spray of wd40 and I think that's cured. Thanks for the help

If you also have an audio signal generator, just hook it up to the terminals and apply a 400 Hz signal to test the speedometer. Your speedometer should show around 120 mph.
An Android phone will act nicely as signal generator, I am using an app called "Simple tone generator" (type 400 and then turn up the volume to max), but there are plenty other apps available. Use an audio cable with a 3.5mm jack connected to the phone and use something like crocodile clips to attach the speedometer signal cable to the phone.
Just so I understand correctly

If I have the speedo on the bench (AKA kitchen worktop as the bench is far too messy) and supply 12V to the speedo with around 100 to 200 Hz for signal this will prove speedo? 100 = 30mph (ish), 200 = 60mph

I ask as the odometer has failed and I can see the small blue gear wheel but idealy want to get stepper motor running to confirm if it's the stepper motor or the gear wheel

I liberated a correct blue 5way connector and so can make up a test rig

pins are (I think) from the top , the numbers refer to the wiring diagram in HBOL page 12.64

4 Live/Positive
# Fuel system (white / red)
3 Pulse from sensor (green wire)
2 'shield'
1 Earth/Neutral

Very good, this is exactly how I bench test the speedometers! (I do have to cope with the same mess, though )

Actually, there is very helpful information on the speedometer print itself so you won't need the confusing information from HBOL. In technical terms, this is called a silkscreen (see more explanation here)

Near the blue 5-pin connector, on the solder side of the print, you can see the symbols of positive, negative and signal inputs. Negative is the one closest to the bottom edge of the print, positive is the one farthest away and signal input is in the middle. (All this information from memory )
There is one unused pin and one that carries the signal to the info centre, useful if you have an oscilloscope but not necessary, there is enough feedback from a working system if the stepper motor and the needle start moving.

Good luck!

thank you, yes saw the wee symbols, and as I already have 'bypassed' ALL wiring on the dash board , ie signal from speedo and its power are ALL fed direct to the small blue plug, and as SWAMBO doesn't worry about mpg then not needing the signal to/from the info/ ECU :-)

the needle was OK, just no odo-meter so want to see if worth pulling apart
Alan

small update.
using the mobile was a 'non-starter'

can't get any signal to go to headphones as the mobile is looking for about 50 or 60ohms on the socket before it turns off the normal earpiece-speaker :-(
a bit of lateral thinking and using a tone generator on the lap-top seems like a plan. (www.szynalski.com)

needed to turn voume up to above half, nearer 3/4 and speedo works but no odo-meter.
so try the other speedo, no odo-meter on it either :-(

I know one odo is bust but was hoping the other one was OK :?

does the signal need to be bigger in order for the odo to work?

also discovered that a PP3 battery (9V) is sufficient to power the speedo, although the needle does flicker a wee bit

NB the PP3 test was done after discovered no odo-meter but warmer in house and funnily enough SWAMBO less than keen or car battery on the table .. .

EDIT

yep both speedo have broken plastic gear wheels :-(

one has two teeth missing, one has a tooth 'folded over' so I guess two gear wheels needed :(

Was about to suggest that! Presumably you've already found the part you need, they were available on eBay last time I checked.

Probably wouldn't have helped in this case, but in general I highly recommend the 'EE Toolkit' app if you have an i-device: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/ee-toolkit/id391792609
It's a really great reference to have and among many other things has a fairly reasonable SigGen built-in.

Hello Alan

Which 480 are we talking about, out of interest?

I have just changed the cog on Nilani and also on Nigel's 480 for him - got mine through ebay from a chap in Hungary, and noted Nigel had done the same. Seem good quality (and working so far!). Can dig out the details if you'd like me to.

Good luck!

David

I can highly recommend the chap in Hungary, I have ordered dozens of cog wheels from him.

I was going to ask for any 'suggested suppliers'

Hello Alan

Actually neither, I have two spare speedo in kitchen! one from EVU, one from Fraser's 'spares-car'
seemed sensible to repair at leisure and have a ready use item. oddly enough one of the failed one was a replacement from 1998 (before I bought EVU)
