headlight motor needed

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

headlight motor needed

Post by bergxu » Mon Jul 03, 2017 11:49 pm

Greetings from the USA gentlemen!

First time poster and hopefully someone here can assist in my issue; I have a wonky headlamp motor which, when the switch is activated, does not go up although if you twiddle the knob on top of the motor, you can feel it "trying" internally as the knob will momentarily spin quickly (or so feels like it does as it vibrates for a split second). I've removed the motor and checked the little earth spade connector and wire and it's fine. You can manually raise the light and then when you shut the lights off, it does down like it's supposed to so I am guessing something internally on the 'up' side of the motor is duff. Does anyone happen to have a spare they would sell me? Need for the left side of the car.

Many thanks!

Aaron

Wait, what? There is a Volvo 480 in the USA? Please, do tell us more! :)

Looks like a broken headlight motor indeed. I can send you a headlight motor, I just bought a couple of spares for $50 each, but the postage across the Atlantic will be bloody expensive...

I don't have a spare motor but I am sure "The Dutch Crew" will provide you a perfect tested one.

A couple of years ago some other American owner showed up in the forum, so now it's two of you at least.

Please tell us more about this car and post some pictures.

Unfortunately, there is no way to post directly to the forum.

However, you can post elsewhere and post the links.

Photobucket is what everyone used to use, but it is becoming a pain in the arse of late. With Photobucket‎ you can post the links between the code and they display on the forum, in-line with the text.

I'd recommend you try photobucket and see how you get on with it‎.

However, if anyone can recommend another provider, I'd be pleased to hear about it. I use Box.net for all my storage but they want you to pay to use the img codes. Dropbox maybe, does that work?‎

I am also intrigued to see ‎a 480 in the USA. So if you have trouble with photos, you are welcome to PM me and I will send you my e-mail address. You can send me the pictures and I will upload them for you.

I have sent you a reply :)

Unfortunately, sending pictures from a mobile device isn't supported in this forum. The Dutch 480 forum has Tapatalk compatibility, which allows to upload images. Including external links is blocked anyway until you have made 10 posts.

I would refrain from using Photobucket. They have changed their terms and conditions, and don't allow linking from an internet forum. They will subsequently block your account and hold your images ransom until you pay. I would use imgur.com or similar.

Bastards! I didn't know that. I'll be shutting my account with theme in that case. Forums all over are going to be a mess!

OK, so we're all dead curious about the 480 in America, but let's not forget the owner....... Welcome to the club Aaron! You've come to the right place for help and advice, lots of friendly and knowledgable people on here plus access to SOME of the parts you might need. Sorry to say though you will become familiar with the term 'unobtanium'. Are you a new 480 owner or have you had it a while ? Pics would be great - what year / model / colour is it ? Enjoy !

Given the precise description of the headlight motor problem, I'm pretty sure the motor is broken, probably one of the contacts inside the motor is faulty.

My big 12 year old Volvo friend will bring the parcel with a headlight popup motor to the post office today, should be at your place halfway next week. E-mail with tracking and tracing information should arrive in your mailbox once it's on its way.
I've thrown some extra bits into the parcel, two headlight hinges and the popup relay, so whatever went wrong, you should be able to repair it. Do you know how to get to the headlight unit? It's easy once you have taken the front part of the car off.

Robert,

Thank you very much, I did see the email notification from post.NL that the package was getting ready to make its journey west. I am familiar with getting everything apart so that's no problem, and I do thank you for the extra little bits in the package. Kind of like when I order replacement parts for my triumph TR6, The company I order from always throws a few pieces of good candy in the package :-)

And thank you all for the warm welcome. The car in question is a 1988 turbo model. I wound up with that is kind of a package deal with a couple of older Peugeots that I was after. Seeing as how I know of no other 480s in the country, I figure it will be unique to show up at various events in once I have it fully sorted out.

At first the only online forum I could find was in Dutch so I was beginning to lose hope but it looks like I stumbled across the right place here!

Thanks again guys and I will post some photos as soon as I can get some time to sit down and post them to a file sharing site.

Regards,
Aaron

Don't let the Dutch at that forum scare you away, because generally the Dutch speak English very well.(*)
But now you've met the friendly lot here you'll probably won't have the need to go anywhere else. :)

(*) we even make fun out of English by word-for-word translating from Dutch, making total nonsense for everybody else while we laugh out loud: https://www.facebook.com/MakeThatTheCatWise/

Hi Aaron,‎

Specifically, can we please see some photos of your interior (cream on some USA cars and different wording on some lamps in the instrument binacle), rear side marker reflectors (red not orange) and front light clusters‎ (orange not clear DRL's) please? These were USA specific from what I remember. Can anyone remember any other USA model differences?

Looking forward to seeing your car. ‎ Maybe you could post in the 'Secret Life of a 480 Owner' section with these?

My car is a 'home market' car, meaning sold new in NL. It was containered and brought over with some Peugeots and Citroens so there isn't anything USA specific about it. Will post those pics when I can get time to get them onto a hosting site.
