Relay

Post by frenchfries » Thu Apr 20, 2017 6:20 pm

Hi all

I guess that I don't need the "missing" relay on the top left corner, right?

Just found some schematics, it seems to be for the "Aux Cooling Pump"

You'll be wanting that then!

It may have been removed as the pump is faulty - It appears to be a standard 4 pin relay, but I can double check if you want?

Would you mind?

I was reading this thread: http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/v ... 0&start=20 but this is as far as I can go :)

That relay was removed on the 2.0 because the auxiliary water pump was deleted on the later engine. But I believe the turbo kept it all its life...so your being a turbo and assuming you have the auxiliary pump, yes, you do need that relay.

As jifflemon says, though, the next question will be why was it removed?

I probably have a spare relay if you need one...let me know.

Hi all

I doubt it was remove for the sake of it so it may be because the pump is faulty. There seem to be quite a lot of confusion on the various "Aux Pump" topics so maybe an engineer in the past did not understand how the pump works and just cut it loose (wishful thinking). I zoomed in on the picture and the relay has 5 pins. Since I know nothing about relays I have been Googling away and found what might be the relay in question:https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=volvo ... T8LHe3LVxM:

It is labelled 30/85/86/87/87a. If someone can confirm which one I need that would be fab.

Thanks for the offer David, you may need it later on so I'd rather buy one :)

Volvo dealer, forgot about those!

I just called the one in Lincoln and they could not really help. They have a P/N 3435274 (Injector cooling relay) but they are not even sure and if this is the part needed they no longer make it :(

I guess as soon as I hear from somebody with more details I will make progress but thank you for the offer nevertheless :)

Quite the opposite! Lake's is a Volvo-only scrap yard in Bedford.

Most of the 480's are well stripped now, but I think they did have a turbo in there.

Frenchfries - May be worth testing the pump first to see if that's working (or rather, whether its another part you need!)

Hi James

In this case could you ask for me please? The Volvo specialist near me is closed until next week anyway. If I have the relay I can start with that and check the pump later on and if it needs fixing than I have the relay.

I don't know where it is or what it looks like :(

Water pump is mounted in a rubber holder attached to the N/S chassis rail. If you take the airbox out and look back along the rail, you'll see it. There's about a foot of wiring attached to it that goes to a black 2 pin connector somewhere near the airbox. Apply voltage to it and see it works, polarity won't matter for testing, it will just run backwards if you get it wrong, if indeed it does run.

Beware pin layouts on some of these relays, standard 'off the shelf' ones will plug into the socket but won't work because the terminals are connected differently. I know this to be the case for fuel, ignition and at least 3 or 4 others in the 480, may be the case with this one too. You can still use any relay but you would have to make up jumpers and connect the terminals from the relay into the socket accordingly. See my last post in 'the wolf roams' thread for more info. My fuel pump is on a bog standard Maplins relay with some little jumpers (male spade one end, female the other) connecting the right terminals on the relay to the right ones in the socket.

Enjoy the meet all.

Unfortunately I am away 5th-11th so cannot make it but Skip will be at the Volvo specialist 4-12th for a good look around. Lots of S40 and a few 850s in there but he promised me that he worked on a lot of 480s so fingers crossed :)
