Windows and Indicators stopped working

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Windows and Indicators stopped working

Post by JimAitken » Sun Nov 20, 2016 5:05 pm

 My 480 has a wicked sense of humour.... gave it a short warm up and spin around the block. Opened the windows and and noticed on my way back the indicators had stopped working (but hazzard lights ok). As it was about to throw it down with the remnants of storm Angus, I tried to close the windows... No joy. Now it is pouring down and the language has gone blue. Got home, tested the fuses and checked the relays but no sign of anything wrong. Had to take the door panels off and hotwire the window motors to a battery to get the windows back up.

Any ideas anyone?

Both the indicators and the electric windows are controlled by the CEM. Switches in the column stalk and in the centre console could be at fault, but it is more likely that there is some weird electrical problem in the CEM, sometimes caused by a bad earth. You could try and clean the earth connection which is on the A-pillar if I am not mistaken. Also you could take out the CEM, brush the connectors clean and check the inside of the CEM.
Anyway, best of luck sorting these electrical gremlins out!

It did cross my mind about the CEM. Will give it a good clean this week when it stops raining. Will let you know.
thanks

I had exactly the same problem in my ES, turned out to be the CEM as Brinkie suggests. Fortunately I had a spare...

Took out CEM and reseated it. All working again. Phew!!

I think I may need to find a replacement just in case.

thanks Brinkie and Jaster

Glad you got it sorted!

The CEM is the potential weak link for so many things on the 480, having a known working spare is very sensible!
