info center symptoms

Hi there, so much stuff on here about info centers I'm not sure where to start.

Mine worked perfectly until about two months ago when the car came back from having something random - idle control valve I think- replaced at the garage when it stopped dead and has never come back to life since.

So my question is when the info center fails does it normally have any symptoms first, or does it just go like mine? The suddenness makes me think I might have a loose connection but I managed to pull my dash to bits and replace the bulbs and still no sign of any helpful info like fuel etc!

I need to go back into the dash in a week or so to try the 'Joep cogwheel fix' so any tips then Im all ears- or I may just go for a new info center at the same time!

Thanks

Tim

If it suddenly died after having under bonnet work done, my best guess would be that they've disturbed the earth strap from the gearbox to the chassis, or battery to chassis.

Apparently, if either of these isn't tip top, the info centre won't play ball.

They could have also disturbed the thin wire (earth? forget now) which connects to the alternator. If that connection goes the IC has all the information, the display is there but not illuminated properly. If you have a good look at the IC display and find that in fact there are characters being displayed but almost impossible to see, then its that wire!

Follow the negative battery strap back from the battery it bolts onto the chassis then continues on down to the engine.
Second earth is attached to the lifting lug at the top left hand side of the engine as you stand in front of car.
