Starting problems

Post by lincoln480 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 10:33 am

My 480 has been a first time starter every time since i had it but today on turning the key after parking up literally 5 minutes before hand, nothing happened.
My son managed to push start me easily enough so i drove it home & parked up.Turned it off, tried again & nothing.
On previous cars,i've tapped the starter motor with a hammer & thats usually done the trick. On the 480 i can't even see where the starter motor is?
Am i right in thinking it's the most likely culprit or should i be looking elsewhere? Can't believe my luck.Looks like on public transport this week.

Hi,

On both my 400s (2.0 480 and 1.8 460) this turned out to be a loose solenoid connection on the starter.

They're to the rear of the engine/bell housing joint, give the cables a little wiggle and make sure they're all connected.

Also worth checking your earths are in good order ;)

Hammers can't fix a 480!!!

If you stand on the passenger side of the car and look behind the engine you should see it, it sits above the gearbox so no need to jack it up.

I traced the wires but can't get to the starter motor.I can hear clicking behind the dashboard..i'm guessing that's starter switch/relay?
So it most probably is a connection to the starter or starter itself.
I have to park on the roadside so it's impossible to get it up on ramps on stands.
Going to have to push start it & take it back to dealer. They gave me a 1000 mile or months warranty.I've only done 60 miles lol.
I would of thought not starting was covered?? :badmood:

Yes as the exhaust is above it.

Got it back today! It's been a right nightmare.Apparently it was down to an immobiliser fitted to the switch by the heated seat switches.the one with a white circle on? I must of accidently flicked it & armed it.Anyway he has taken the wiring out(his words)He had glovebox out etc & says there are no non volvo wires anywhere now?
My problem is,is now the ABS & SRS lights are on all the time??
Any idea's please.i checked fuse 32 & it was fine.

If this does not solve the problem we will open a new thread specifically on this problem as it is possible they have cut a wire  they shouldnt have even I do that sometimes

If so be prepared for a a longish haul it might come down to me stripping the centre console down and photographing wiring then you can compare , photograph yours (wiring that is  ) and so it goes on we might manage to find the fault quickly or not. But find it we will otherwise you are screwed for an mot.

Thanks for your help Jim.I tried it but no luck.I'm going to give it another go in case i didn't leave it disconnected long enough first time.
Seems like they must of pulled out or cut wires somewhere. Can't believe they've buggered up the blower too :(
I'm going to have to take it back to them on Tuesday. He did tell me he'd had glovebox out etc so he's messed/missed something.

Tried it again Jim but no joy.Garage have said to bring it back in on Tuesday.Seen as they messed it up i'll let them try & sort it first.I'm not very confident with Wiring.
Will let you know what happens. Thanks again for all your help.
Simon.

:hopping: Just got the car back.Everything sorted & all i could really get out of them was that it was an earth wire.I guess it got disconnected when they were locating immobiliser wires.

Jim,i've pm'd you a couple of times did you get them? Thanks Simon.
