Long range lights not working

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Long range lights not working

Post by ChrisDK » Mon Apr 15, 2013 9:44 am

Hi All
I'm seeking advise to trouble shoot why my long range lights don't work. The obvious first, light bulb's are not blown, no fuses blown although I can't find out wich fuse is connected to the long range lamps. I know the car was first sold is Switsezland and maybe they don't aprove of long range lamps ??

But where to start looking for faults ? advise apreciated :)

Regards

Chris

The other obvious is the switch :P

Sorry I can't offer anything more constructive, probably just logical elimination of possible faults with a multimeter is called for

The long range lights only operate when the headlamps are on full beam and the switch in the lower console is turned on.

Just to confirm if the popups are down they should come on with a flash irrespective of the switch. If the popups are up they will only work if the switch next to the heated seats switch is on.

I had a problem with the switch where they would only work with the popups down so as stated a good place to start.

If they don’t work at all (as you have not mentioned they work at all) you have a bigger problem than the switch or as you say it’s because it’s from Switzerland.

You are absolutely right, they don't work at all. I will have a closer look into it on friday. And if it isn't the switch mayby for some odd reason they have been disconected. I can't see the point in that but it is a possibility.

Had a look today, not getting closer to the problem. Double cheked all the fuses, no blown fuses. switch seems to be allright. I don't know if it has annything to do with this, but the rear fog lights don't work either. I'm somewhat puzzled, cheked the fog lights, all seemed fine, changed the bulbs just to be sure. It seems that I have a major electrical bug, I took a picture of the relay box, but can't really see if I miss a relay.

Thanks jamesy

It resembles pretty much the general faluts I'm experiencing. An obvius place to start looking would be the back of the fuse boks.

No worries Chris, the old thread I linked seemed to indicate the relay for the long range lights lived inside the CEM.

So, according to the posts, if you locate the unit and remove its cover you can operate/test the relay using a toothpick or similar.

I have never tried this btw so good luck. At the end of the thread it did say that the problem was actually down to a poor earth connection!!

edit: oh yeah sorry from your post u understood that it could be a dodgy (bad) earth. I am a little slow today...too much celebrating last night :bored:

I know it's been a logn time since I started this tread, but today finaly I got a chance to have a look. And it din't bring answers just more questions. As You know there was like a trilion wires, I could'nt see loose wires but I was not the easiest place to look. I even tried to take out the CEM but gave up. It seems that someboby has been there looking at a previous time, the CEM was hanging loose with no screws in it.

I did find something interesting, a relay  see picture. annyone got an idea what that does ? I also found to loose wires and connected them only resulting in a very loud beebing sound ??

Anny thoughts ??

Cheers Chris
