Mileometer change - winding it on ?

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Mileometer change - winding it on ?

Post by Ulrika480 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 2:23 pm

As my info centre is dieing and I get bouncing needles on both the speedo and tacho followed by nothing, I've decided to replace the whole instrument cluster with one that I hope will be better.

How do I wind my mileage ON from the 80k on the 'new' speedo to the 130k that matches the car and all my paperwork ?(I did a quick search for mileometer but drew a blank)

Thanks

The problem with trying to adjust it by stripping the unit down and moving the digits on is that they never align themselves properly but you can remove the motor and ease them apart to cycle them forwards only. please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Ok thanks. I decided to SORN it (for the first time) until the end of March so will have a look then.

If you take the speedometer / milage counter unit apart, you'll see something like this (unit removed from a 1986 480ES)
Image

The stepper motor (brown) on the printed circuit board to the left drives the counters. I once used a small drill (dremel tool) with a small gear, to "play stepper motor" myself. I could advance the counter by a few thousands kilometers quite easily. Advancing the counter some 50,000 miles will take some more time, but can be done this way...

easier way to do this than you think ..

since no one increases mileage on the speedo all you need do is photograph the old instrument pod in situ then the new one in place and print out the 2 digital photos side by side on the same A4 sheet of paper and then make it into a certificate of changeover sign and date it.

that way the problem is solved the easy way. When I supplied a replacement speedo I also produced a certificate of mileage.
