Why has my 480 just told me to piss off?!

Hi all,

I read in the Haynes book of lies about how to get the info centre to show how much is in the tank, which worked well.

But with the switch in the other positions, I get a load of numbers which seem to mean nothing, and in one position in particular I get this:



Other positions are a variation on this:



Anyway, I was wandering if these have any sort of meaning??

Any ideas anyone?

How exactly did you do this? I've had a look through the BOL but I can't find it.

There's been discussion about this in the past and it's not resolved. Possibly some values are indicated.
Recently I made the same discovery and it would be interesting to compare the output at the different positions of the switch.

Hmmm... Very strange!

Bloody over ambitious 480 electrics!!

To get it to tell you to piss off, simply turn the knob to "fuel inst", hold reset, then turn on tue ignition...
Ta-Dah... You have an insulting 480!!

Range seems very closely linked to fuel avg (showing litres in tank)

If you get it to show litres and dance about on the car, the figure will jump about, the same happens with the figure shown when range is selected.

If I get a chance (and my info centre is actually working) I'll get the full set for sh1ts and gigs!

Ok, so my info centre was playing ball.

I've listed what it said, along with the actual value if anyone can see a link between the figure shown and the real thing?!

As there is no distortion in the display the connections behind the dash seem to be OK. May be the switch is malfunctioning and signaling the circuit to display clearly readable nonsense by shorted contacts or no contact at all.
Fiddling the dismounted switch and it's connections may show changes in the display. If not, get a hand behind the dash and touch the protruding pins on display level. (They are the actual contacts.)

Just edited my figures.
Only for fuel ins I also see the l/100km mark indicated. The other diagnostic settings do not have l or l/100 or km/u or C indicated. That could mean P5.0 F has something to do with l/100km.
