Pop-up headlight problem

Post by Twotone93 » Mon May 28, 2012 10:07 pm

Hello

Ive noticed today that only my passenger side headlight pops-up and the drivers side stays down. All my day running lights are good and I can see the drivers side bulb lighting up. Any ideas why it wont pop-up?

Many Thanks

Some initial pointers may be found here: http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo480/faq/index.php (click on electrical, lights, pop-ups)

Also try a forum search/google search of the forum (I forget which now works the best) as its sure to have been adressed before.

Where abouts are the dampers and where can I order them from or a new motor?

Do you know they are at fault? For one thing, if my memory is correct I think the two pop-up motors are on different fuses so have you checked them?

Best bet for motors is to find someone who's breaking a 480, as for the dampers, I'dd imagine going new is the way to go...

Dead simple to perform a quick check.

1 check fuses as per capt slow's advice replace fuse.
2 manually raise the popup if it wont go up then the motor is seized. Replace motor they are not sided.
3 remove the the cover of relay box and remove the tall relay and bridge the connections with a wire if the popup goes up and down then the wiring is ok. You need to check the rest of the circuit or use a multimeter.
If no movement then the motor is likely to be faulty. Remove motor and connect to circuit again does it work if not then its truely goosed. Remember that the bonnet latch has a microswitch to tell it that the bonnet is closed you have to close this switch for the circuit to work.

then get back to us with yopur esults

Tonight so far checked fuses they all ok but replaced them anyway. I can move the light up and down manually so the motor is not seized up. Not yet tested the relay yet but weary about playing around with that never had to work on that sort of stuff before.

Dont worry its easy the connections are marked out on the side of the relay and the connections are numbered underneath so its straightforward.

Checked relay no luck there so next stop maybe a dead motor.

its easy to remove passenger side motor , take it out and connect to good side and if it doesnt work then is totally goosed.

I'm having problems with my passenger side too.....it has always been a bit slower than the left, in sticks down after not being used, usually manually rising it helps, but this time it is even slower when it "pops" up...does that point to the damper? when i manually raise it it is pretty stiff, but it does work. thanks.

can be several things but first check the damper by disconnecting one end and pushing damper up up and down should be a stiff resistance .

if damper ok then when its disconnected check that the hinges are greased
but in all probability then motor is on the way out

Just got in from a nights drive turned of lights (that were not moving together anyway as drl is out) and the drivers side goes down half way and the passenger one goes down, then up, then down etc. this continues even when I turn them back on and only stops when I turn ignition off.

Any ideas?
Thanks

When my car was on the road the driver's light used to struggle to pop up (a bit of a delay over the passenger's one) but after it's last MOT it stopped coming up altogether. I'll have a look at all the points mentioned here and report back, I have a spare motor and a used damper so I might be ok, I'll also grease up the hinges!

Figured out the problem with the drivers' headlight today, it's the bloody motor I found out after plugging in the spare one I have. The old one is loose but it is a pain in the arse to wiggle out! I can't get good enough access to the one bolt that holds the frame thing in place as the washer bottle is in the way! Very frustrating!

Anyone have any tips? I'm I just going to have to get those bottles out the way?

Can be done without removing water reservioir but is a total pain and very slow. best to remove water reservoir thats the way I will do it in future as I have changed 2 the front way even removed the dipdim relay but thats another story....

So remove reservoir just lift and shove out the road disconnect as little as possible.
