No radio, clock, fag lighter or info - fuse OK - HELP!

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

No radio, clock, fag lighter or info - fuse OK - HELP!

Post by triumphtoledo » Wed Jan 11, 2012 7:57 pm

Hi everyone,
I have just bought a 1994 2.0 480 with 65,000 miles. Before I introduce it to you all, I would liken to sort out its little niggles...

The main one I have is no radio power, no clock, no cigarette lighter and (above all) no info centre display (although the backlight is on). The fuse is OK but I understand all of these circuits are linked.

Any ideas>

have you checked the plugs/connections under the dashboard in the left side of the car? maybe they need connection cleaner.

Is that behind the glovebox (on a UK car)? There are loads of plugs there; which one should I need?

Thanks guys.
I have removed the relays, cleaned the contacts, and put them back. Sadly, the radio, fag lighter and info centre still do not work, although the SRS lamp and door open light now. Yay!

But, the main fault is not cured. I have had a peek beneath the dash. I think I can see the earth, in the form of a connector, which I have removed, cleaned and replaced. Alas nothing. Is there another earth or well-known connection that fails that I might have missed?

Thanks,

Well, I think I may have the problem licked. I pulled the fuse box down and noticed that, if I shorted out the earth between fuses 20 and 21, everything springs back into life.

I have fiddled with the wires, sparayed it with contact cleaner and nothing else works, other than shorting out the two terminals. I have used a piece of welding wire but, tomorrow, I plan to solder a bridging wire in place behind the fuse board.

However, I think I would be suicidal not to insert an additional fuse and so does anyone know which fuse rating 21 and 22 should be on a 1994 model (these fuses control the info centre, fag lighter, clock, radio and aerial - unlike the earlier models)

Cheers!

Rob (getting closer to driving my 480!)

can you put a picture of the connection you have bridged to see if we car work out what rating of fuse you need.

There's no figuring that needs to be done. All I need to know is the standard rating for fuses 21 and 22. Anybody?

fuse rating is simple it depends on whether you have a 26 or 32 fuse fusebox

exactly what do you mean when you say you shorted out the earth ?

use a multimeter and you will soon find the problem as you have narroed it down considerably.

in a 32 fuse fusebow the fuse ratings are...

fuse number fuse rating
1 25A
2 10A FOR LHD BUT 3A FOR RHD
3
4 3A
5
6 20A
7 30A
8 20A
9 20A
10 20
11 (lhd) 3A
12 15A
13 10A
14 7.5A
15 7.5A
16 5A
17 7.5A
18 15A
19 15
20
21 7.5A
22 7.5A
23
24 20A
25 20A
26 30
27 30A
28 7.5A
29 7.5A
30 7.5A
31 7.5A
32 5A

FUSE 21 IS CIGAR LIGHTER,KEYHOLE LIGHT,INFO CENTRE,RADIO (FUSE 2 IS RHD RADIO ILLUMINATION AND FUSE 29 IS ALSO RADIO ILLUMINATION.

now you know , just realised I was using upper case but I wont retype it now.

Wonderful Glasgow, thanks ever so much; that is exactly what I needed to know.

I took the 480 out for a drive earlier, with most of its fascia parts hanging down. All seems fixed, including the dodgy speedo and info centre. I now have to bolt the trim all back together.

I'll then wash her and get you some pics...
