Heater Fan

Post by Zoist » Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:53 am

Hi

the heater fan for the cabin only had 2 settings 2 and 3. but now it don´t work at all! I have checked the resistants, and the fan, and the switch.
The switch has the needed 12 volt, but the resistance and the fan don´s get any power. I have checked the fuse and it is fine.

anyone who has tried something like this or has any idea what can be wrong?

It is a bit of a problem in this time of the year, I can´t see anything without the heat!

I take it your "4" position doesn´t work due to problems in the VEM?

Have you checked the fan itself by connecting 12V directly? And via the resistors?

You say the fan switch is connected to 12V. Do you mean the input, common contact (red or white-black wire) of the switch has 12V? How about 12V on the 3 (or 4 in later models with "0" position) output contacts?

There is no connector (which could cause problems) between the fan switch and the resistors and wires seldom fail...
To be continued...

hi the switch gets 12 V though the white-black wire. the resistors gets 12 V too... the fan gets 12 V bot dont start.
BUT if i connect the fan directly to 12 V it works????

but now i have sold the car... sorry guys i just could not effort to keep it...

I promised the buyer to keep him in the loop how to fix the problem.

Anything new on this front? I was checking the voltage on mine today, position 4 no voltage at all and after I checked the connections to the resistor it dropped from 8.something down to 4.something. It's been working poorly since I bought it, progressively getting worse and worse. AC MAX did nothing at all from the very start and I loaded up the system with gas to see if that was the issue but without the blower working properly there wasn't much it could do. I pulled it out and saw someone had hastily swapped it out with a random 12V motor and put some stuffing in the casing, it was off centre and made a rattling noise... I swapped this one out today for an eBay-bought blower, thinking that'd do the trick but I'm guessing I'm going to have to open up the VEM and do some soldering...

Anyone know these conditions? I've read someone talk about position 4 and the VEM but I'm still studying your posts to see what I can find...

Edit: Pressing any of the buttons on the VEM I can see a metal arm change position with the glovebox taken out, so that seems to work fine.

As you've got a VEM, I'd suggest a read of this

Have already, was hoping it wouldn't come to that but I see it's just a matter of time.

Much appreciated, thank you.

Will (Jaster, forum member in UK) fixed my VEM as it has bad solder joints and heat damage. It works perfectly now. If he is busy, Robert (Brinkie, forum member in NL)) could maybe help you . ‎

Thanks James, I'm gonna give it a go myself after practicing with a couple of boards off some discarded electronics before I go for the VEM.

Well, took out the VEM and sure enough, a contact was completely released from the board and one of the tubes in the back had broken off.
Soldered the contact, put some epoxy glue on the tube and eventually put it back in the car.

Blower now works! All button positions, but only on the highest fan setting. And when I slide from cold to hot I hear a clicking sound behind the glove-box. I'm wondering if it's the resistance there, it blows hot air alright but it has 4 pins and I'm not sure if it also regulates the blower speed, I recall reading something but I can't find it now. Edit: I've checked the clicking/rattling noise and it's the blower motor, for some reason it only does this when the slider is all the way right, max heat. Wondering if related.

Also, the air isn't cool and I loaded it up last summer. They told me it didn't leak so I'm guessing I need a new compressor?

Any ideas?
