Relays

Post by deviliShred480 » Mon May 24, 2004 7:47 pm

Can someone plesae tell me which relay is which. The Haynes manual says there should be diagram inside the cover but it is either missing or was never there in the first place (good old Haynes error)

Image

Is the empty slot the one where the front fogs relay should be? Tried working out which is what but all seem to have the same pole numbers marked on the cases.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Right, this COULD vary. I have a schematic which seems to indicate its for "A.C RELAY". I presume this is air conditioning ?

I need to get me scanner sorted out and I'll post the schematic for reference (this is for a 2.0 l mind- I don't know if it applies to the 1.7i and Turbos (my Turbo doesn't have aircon for instance)

Thanks for the link mogge but the author of the site seeemed a bit unsure, almost asking, the location for which relay. Not only that the example was taken from an earlier model and didn't seem to correspond to mine as far as which relays were fitted.

So just what IS your car? (type and age)?

Based on a 1990 car, VADIS has the following to say which may or may not be useful (note L is missing a description):

Just been on the VIN reader and it is definitely a '93 S model with a
B18F-106 engine.

Thanks for the link Dragon.

Still confused as relay 'G' is missing completely from my box which should be for the pop up motors on the diagram you posted the link for. As my lights pop I would think I have a relay in there somwhere controlling them.

still lonely and even more confused :? :?

Just checked for a 93 model and it's the same, bit remember that the information is designed for all sub-models, so not all cars will have all relays at a guess...

Thanks Ben for the schematic this seems to make more sense than others I have seen so far, to a certain extent.

I appear to have a relay in position 'K' which is for the ABS system, which as far as I am aware is not fitted, having locked the wheels on two occasions that I can recall it certainly doesn't work. But then again I have no relay or connectors at position 'J' for the ABS pump so no surprise really!

I know I have read somewhere on the site or forum that the 480 seems to throw up oddities/quirks on individual vehicles, usually with interior trim I thought. Have I the misfortune of having found one relating to the electrics? In Marshalls to pick up some bulbs for the clocks Thursday or Friday might see if someone there can shed any light on the situation.

Yet even more confused :? :? :?

You can tell if it has ABS or not, by looking in the following places.

The earlier ones had the ABS controller (ECU thing) located in the cubby hole in the boot on the same side as the aerial. If you look there, and don't find it, then it could have one of the later ABS systems.

The later ones had the ABS controller under the bonet. I've borrowed a picture of Gaz (Dragon)'s 480 Celebration, as it shows the location of the ABS controller perfectly (Hope you don't mind Gaz!):

Image

If you don't have either of them, then I think it's fair to say you don't have ABS!

The guys in Marshalls (well the parts department, anyway), whilst being very helpful when it comes to finding spares for you (and taking your money!), aren't particularly knowledgeable when it comes to troubleshooting problems. I've been in there three times this week already trying to get a radiator hose which VADIS shows as not being part of my engine, and only part of a later engine. Aparently, my B18E engine, whilst it DOES have an auxilary water pump (part number shown in VADIS), the hose that it should connect to doesn't exist on my engine, but it does on a later one! :? Anyway - I've got the right part now, from the later engine, so all's well.

Also, if you're after replacement bulbs, I'm not sure how much Marshalls will charge, but the little car shop down Mill Road (Wilko?) is where I got my replacements from, and I think they were about 50p each (probably much less than Marshalls). You would need to have the old ones for them to match though.

Relays

Finally got the switch for the front foglights and tried a relay in the empty slot in the relay box, position 'E' see Ben Harris' schematic post, and that is definitely the one for the front fogs. :D
Borrowed the relay from postion 'K' and the rear fogs ceased to function, so definitely not for the ABS system on my model, none of the ABS components fitted as per photo in the post previous.

Didn't get to speak to who I wanted to in Marshalls Peterborough, but has seemed helpful in the past, I assume you were refering to Marshalls Cambridge Ben.

Yes the bulbs were hideously priced at £1.10 for an illumination bulb and £1.90 for the smaller function illumination bulbs. The thing was I needed them for when I had the dash out and wanted the correct bulbs but wont go to Marshalls again for them in future.

When I finally get round to fitting all components for the front fogs may try to work out what all relays do so that someone else planning to fit front fogs to S model can reference the info, and so I don't forget!!

Relays and pop-ups

Post by Brasco » Fri Jan 07, 2005 7:04 pm

I have a 93 S too and have the same empty space in my relay box. Did you figure out what it was for?
I have an intermittent problem with my pop-ups, where the near side light winks if I pop them up and down with the engine running. Seems to function fine when the engine isn't running tho... thought it could be the relay. Ben's mail with the schematic isn't showing up and the download is all Dutch to me  Anyone got any ideas?
