no spark on a 1989 ES

Post by BobDeere » Sat Aug 13, 2011 6:02 pm

Hi all
my name is Robert and im totally new in Volvo .. but i came across one 1986 ES that had the head broken..
so i ended buying a 1989 white ES with only 100.000 km on..
the car is in quite good condition. with no rust..
anyhow.. there is no spark..
i have tryed following..
new distributor cap.
new rotor.
new spark
i also have tryed to see if i get any light from a bulb attached to the low voltage module .. but nothing there
i measured the Ohm of the sensor attached to againt the flywheel and it was ok..

BUT.. the contact that is connected to the low voltage module behind the coil gives only 170 mVolt instead as 300-400 as the Haynes book indicate i should get..
any idea if these is the problem? how do I increase the voltage?
I have disconected the computer box located in the compartment but i the connectors looks nice..

Thanks for your help
Robert

sorry for the newbie question..
but where can i find the ignition relay?
and the fuse? is it the one placed on the left side far below and with a mirror?
regarding the fuses.. i looked in the Haynes manual and as far i can see there is no fuse connected to the ignition..
or am i missing something here?

Cheers
Robert

yes you possibly are

Older models of 480 had a smaller number of fuses in fusebox so they had 2 located as shown in the photo the relays had a fuseholder on the back .

Have never worked on a pre 92/1 car so there may be slight differences so check your owners handbook as HBOL is not very good for a 480

The fuses are on fuseholders behind /on top of relay fixture. That is what I meant by the back not the back of the car.

These are found under the dashboard at drivers far right hand side . The picture is taken from the drivers footwell looking upwards.

sorry to be a pain..
but you mean the regular one provided with a mirror??
or is it another one further up more close to the relays?
still.. i dont understand how the relays or the fuses can generate just half of the current..

thanks for your help

since i live in Sweden my car is left hand drive..
and i have the fusebox way down.. almost at the floor. since its so low its provided with a mirror so its easier to see the fuses..
and yes the starter turns..
actually almost everything work in the car "but not the pop up lights, they are up all the time"
but no spark.. not even at the coli..

Hej Robert

did not realise that you were writing in a foreign language :D

Although your car is LHD the body work and wiring were reversed round. Your car will have 2 fuses clipped onto the relays which on your car will be above the drivers left hand foot behind the dash board. If they are ok the complete check list would be ...

1 fuses
2 coil
3 distributor cap and rotor
4 check alternator and battery because if the voltage drops too low when the engine turns over the fuel ECU will not receive enough voltage to activate the coil.
5 check earths

if all else fails then replace the fuel ECU they are on sale on UK ebay for £20 each.

Ok..
update of the parts checked:

1 fuses all ok as far i can see..
2 coil dont know.. but only 220 mVolt on the low voltage part and 12 volt on the other contact
3 distributor cap and rotor.. exhanged
4 check alternator and battery because if the voltage drops too low when the engine turns over the fuel ECU will not receive enough voltage to activate the coil. new recharged battery but only 220mVolt measured
5 check earths as far i can see everithing is ok..
6 almost forgot what about the capacitor connected to the ignition module? i dont have any capacitor connected there, only a black wire connected on one of the screws that
fasten the ignition coil on the low voltage part

i also took apart the computer module and used contact cleaner spray on the connections.

still no spark...

I have another car that was in use before the cambelt when off..that car is a 1986..
have those 2 cars interchangeble parts?

thanks for your answers
Robert
