no spark on a 1989 ES

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

as new ignition module is rather expensive - ~200EUR  w/o postage on ebay.de it's better to be 100+5% sure that it's faulty :D

first of all your 300-400mV reading is for B18E engine so forget it. you should have used next step in fault finding workflow which requires LED :)

I'm not sure which Haynes book you've got - early one up to 1992 models or later one up to 1997 models but basically they have same workflow for ignition system checking. so if you've any of them use it :)

things you should check are:
1) flywheel sensor - check resistance is within tolerable range, should be clean, fitted properly (should fit only one way)
2) power supply/earth connection to ignition module.
3) ignition signal - that's where LED comes into play
4) ignition coil output/power supply signals.

if I understand wiring correctly, connectors on ignition module should be conneted to following locations:
* one 3 pin connector should have flywheel sensor/ignition signal/knock sensor connected to it
* another 3 pin connector has flywheel sensor/knock sensor/ground
* 2 pin connector has ECU signal/REV counter

just follow Haynes and you should be fine - it's fairly simple.
goodluck and hope this helps.

PS sorry for stupid question but what makes you think you've no spark? have you tested on HT lead with spark in it?

Look up the correct page in the download parts book....

http://volvo480.dyndns.org/v480eu/downl ... tsbook.pdf

I think this will help significantly.

as it seems to indicate 2 parts.

It may be worth thoroughly cleaning all the contacts on the coil and the earth. My 480 was completely dead,no spark whatsoever.I thought it was something serious, but the old guy at the Volvo Garage told me to clean all contacts as mentioned before looking further.I did as advised and it started first turn of the key and has had no problems since.
The contacts over a period of time seem to build up a scale on them and eventually it builds up and cuts off the flow of current.Hope its something simple-good luck if you have to investigate further. travelman.

among the first thing i made was to sandpaper all the oxided contacts and even use a contact spray..
no luck..
but if i look at the rear of the ignition module you cna see its a cote of epoxi..
my guess its there for protecting the components..
these coat have some thin cracks.. so my guess is that water have come inside and make the circuits non working..

Rob if you look at the schematic of the ignition coil it looks as if it comes in 2 parts a coil like the one BDB spoke about and a frame which holds the "vacuum" part. Well worth a look.

the fuel pump relay is one of the relays shown on the original photo I put up on an earlier page of this thread. The relay will have a fuse holder mounted on it so check the fuse first.

Hi.
When left-hand drive, the fuel pump relay is on the passenger side in front of the door, at least at 2l and turbo. Don't know if this is true at '89 ES. It should be mounted in a holder together with the ignition relay.

Best Regards.
