No my speedometer does not move atall! neither does my odometer( is this the tacho?) but my rev counter does! My little car is G reg automatic. Actually reading about other peoples woes with this it seems as if it is something which could takes decades to fix if atall. I certainly do not have the skills to do this so maybe a knight in shining armour will appear in Suffolk!! heres hoping. I make a mean fairy cake!!

I can reccomend taking the dash off and having a play-its not difficult. Although since the cluster has been changed jim may be right about the speedo sensor

Captain Slow, the sensor was checked about 2 years ago before I had a new cluster and it was not at fault but with a different cluster would that affect it? I think if I attempted to take off the dashboard myself it would be a a loooooong time before it was back on!! am not really mechanically minded but am willing to learn but would need a helping hand hand nearby to pick up the pieces!!! but it really nice to hear suggestions and to know that I'm not alone with this problem.

The different cluster (with the same coloure plugs at the back) should have no effect.

Here's a link to my favourite how to:
http://volvo480.northernscum.org.uk/for ... 24&t=14976

It seems unusual that niether speed sensor change or cluster has solved the problems. One would suspect the cluster still but there is a connection from the sensor to the wiring loom that you could also check. As I recall its a black connector with 2 wires in, 2 out and is in the enging bay just between the drivers side (if RHD) popup and the washer fluid reservoir.

when I got the instrument cluster I bought it from james who said it was working and it is the right one for my car, however I will have a look at the sensor again in the near future. Thanks for suggestions.

Hi
I had a problem with my speedo not working for 6 months. Your mileage wont go up unless speedo is working, (think Ive saved about 3000miles with mine not working)

I found that the solder on the back of the multi pin plugs on the back of the printed circuit board had cracked. I resoldered all the cracked ones and it got my speedo working.

Might be worth taking the circuit board to an electrician to get soldered if your not happy to do it yourself.

Hope this helps.

Guy

If that was on the metal 'prongs' that connect the pcb to the actual clock unit it would not originally have been soldered. These are however the classic dodgy connection for an intermittent infocentre-just giving the contacts a clean sorts it out in my experience.

thanks very much for advice about connections at the back, I will mention this when I take it to have a service next month. the guy who does my car is really into Amazons etc but is whizz at sorting things out but not this!!I wish I knew how to do things but it would be fatal!! As for who is James it is James who often seems to have things for sale!! When i got this instrument cluster my car jumped from the orignal 53,000 miles (which is when it suddenly decided not to work anymore on the M11 ) to 87,000 where it has stayed for the last two years!!
