Post by Erics480 » Thu Feb 12, 2004 9:20 pm

I want to install a navigationsystem in my 91 480T, does anyone know if there is a signal (called GAL) to feed this navigation system.

Hi Eric,

what's this then, "GAL"? Have GPS in my 480 using a pocketpc and TomTom Navigator 2, works like a charm! And better: isn't that expensive actually :D (might do a page about GPS solutions in the 480 when I have time...).

Off topic: found the CD with photos you took in 2000 of the first ever Volvo 480 Club EUROPE meeting :D Shall I post a copy back to you? If so, please mail me your address :)

GAL means Speed signal (electronic), It's standard on all modern cars.
It just come out of the ISO-DIN connector, PIN 1

Is that to make the GPS more accurate when you loose your GPS-fix?

I'm not sure, this signal also increase the volume if you make more rpm's.
VDO and Becker system always use this signal. (that's what the manual says).

have a look at
http://www.becker.de/beckerCC21/www_roo ... %20CD5.pdf

It's in dutch, but it will show what I mean

I believe I know what you mean without looking (bit of a hurry now). Modern cars indeed have a signal that amplifies the sound out of your radio when you're doing more RPM or km/h :)

Can't tell if the 480 has this signal, sorry.

There’s a speedo signal in the car ,
Also known as the cruise control signal , I think you will need a pulse amp.
As the speedo feed works, to the gps device , you tripcomputer looses the av. Speed function ect. ( mine did )
I have to look up the precise wire / pin

Gr,b
it ain't got the power, if it ain't a turbo

I'm using a laptop with a USB GPS receiver. Works great. Thinking about getting a 5" extension LCD monitor..
