Starting problems some progress but PLEASE HELP !!
So, my car starts OK with no problems at all after 2 weeks in the garage. Leave it for 15min running, switch off, leave it for another 10min and try to start again. Starter cranks the engine but no firing!!
Push start the car with very little effort and fires!
Turn off, and try to turn on again. Same problem. Engine turns (very well !!!) but no firing.
Battrey - 62 A/hr, 6months old !!!
Hook up a huge truck battrey and engine fires immediatley.
Get fed up .. put car back in garage, a week passes, try to start it and fires immediatley. Turn off, try again, same problem !!!
W T F ?!?!?
Voltage drop on cranking with 62A/hr battrey drops to about 11V. About normal, right ?
Any ideas pleaseee ????
As soon as I have some spare time I thought I'd change the battrey-to-starter lead with a thicker and new cable maybe this is causing the voltage drop.
ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED !!

Re: Starting problems -- PLEASE HELP !!
I would say you are ready for a new starter. also check your earth on the gearbox.
Check condition of spark plugs / HT leads / dizzy cap / rotor arm.
check the state of the wiring from your ignition switch (not sure though as i can see your a r5 conversion)
Check the condition of your engine temp sensor (the one under spark plug 4, not the one on the side of the engine)
check the condition of the cranksensor
check condition of the coil, sounds like you may have a coil failing, they work fine cold but die when they get warm.
check your lambda sensor this can bugger up your starting
check condition of idle conrol valve and assosiated plumbing (if your running higher than standard boost the diaphram valve can pack in)
check if the MAF sensor is working correctly
Hope this gives you a starting point, let us know the results of the tests and we shall have a think.

Re: Starting problems -- PLEASE HELP !!
Thanks for your detailed reply.
I am thinking the problem is more starter related as when I push the car it starts immediately. And when i say pushing i mean just moving the car a couple of metres and it starts straight away.
Ignition barrel has been replaced with toggle ON/OFF & push start switches.
Starter turns ok but engine does not start, so you recken it is draining too much current due to it being faulty ? I need to pull out and check it then.

i would say take the starter out (i know it's a horrible job!) and throw it at the neighbours cat then go get a new new one. that should hopefuly sort the problem out. more then likely the solinoid is on it's last legs!

Thing is the starter seems to turn very well !! What I have done this afternoon is changed its main supply with a new thicker cable, as the old one seemed abit thin. The engine sits in my R5 and when I had done the conversion I had used the cable that was being used by the other starter. I tried a couple of times and it always started (cross-fingers). But battrey needed charging so I pulled it out and is currently on charge.
Meanwhile I had started some other work on the car so i can't take it out for a ride and tell what it will do. Hopefully it was the cable that was dropping the voltage.
Will keep you updated once I take out for a ride
Thanks for the help

a had same problem, the problem was starter. i checked all (sensors, new battarey, ecu etc) 3monts no car %)
Volvo turbo
Re: Starting problems -- PLEASE HELP !!
it might seem to turn over fine but the starter will be drawing too much power from the battery, the turbo ecu's wont work with a voltage that goes under 11v so you could be spinning the starter all day but the power is too low for the ecu so a spark wont be sent!

Re: Starting problems -- PLEASE HELP !!
mmmm... I know what you mean. That's what I was suspecting that because of the voltage drop the ECU won't work.bkf_uk wrote:it might seem to turn over fine but the starter will be drawing too much power from the battery, the turbo ecu's wont work with a voltage that goes under 11v so you could be spinning the starter all day but the power is too low for the ecu so a spark wont be sent!
Let's see how much the starter will cost me then !! I'm from Malta and here all parts are veryyyy expensive! if you manage to find!!!
Re: Starting problems -- PLEASE HELP !!
Hey guys... still battling through with this problem !!!
It is now certain it is voltage drop the cause for the car not starting some times.. while cranking sometimes voltage drops below 11v and the ECU won't work.
I have pulled the starter out and being that here in Malta buying parts is a big problem, I took the starter at an electrician and changed the brushes and solenoid. He also checked the armature and said its perfect.
The problem has decreased a lot but not completely !
I thought I'd use a powercap, like the ones used in audio systems, and plug it between the battery and the loom/ECU supply wire (the one next to the TPS and the temp. sensor)
Hopefully it will keep enough voltage while cranking.
What do you think ????? any feedback is greatly appreciated

Re: Starting problems -- PLEASE HELP !!
I think that it's not correct solution of your problem.
Did you checked ECU electrical loom?
Or, maybe the battery is in bad condition? Is it Bosch silver?

Battery is 62Ah and is only 1 year old.
What do I need to check in the loom ?

Re: Starting problems -- PLEASE HELP !!
not all parts are expensive , upto 2 kg and length under 60 cm is only about 18 euros max postage and thats airmail 4/7 days delivery time.
2nd hand volvo 480 parts can be supplied at the same cost as in Uk except for postage so check here first. You might be surprised .
I ship 2nd hand spares to anywhere in the world .

Yes, but cold start sensor also replaced with new one.
Spark is OK, no fuel.
Maybe fuel ECU ??? which one is it ? the black or silver ?
