Non-operative foglight

Non-operative foglight

Post by Captain Slow » Tue Jan 18, 2011 10:07 pm

I really just need someone to tell me ''thats impossible, you must have been being right daft''

So, front foglights were not working, turns out a fuse had gone, replaced that and the left front still wasnt on. Therefore replaced bulb. No help. The foglight unit seems to have all the correct continuity so I checked what the plug on the car side was up to. With the foglights switched off a short across the two parts of the plug to the foglights was indicated, however with the foglights switched on my multimeter gave a voltage of 12V. This left me :? so I thought about it for a while and am still :?

Must've done something wrong...

when you say a short was indicated what do you mean ?

the voltmeter should read 12 v when live and 0 v when switched off.

Sorry, I mean it read no resistance between the two pins. I think. I'll leave it to the weekend and test in daylight!

This is exactly what it does, and the foglight unit seems fine. Maybe its a problem with the plug connection...think thats one of the next things to eliminate...

Will try by swapping with the foglight thats working

Check the contacts in the bulbholder itself for corrossion or misalignment. Mine were bended in the drl so the lamp itself didn't get any current.

Already checked that, but can do no harm doing it again.

Rather embarassing but....how is the top of foglight fixed to the car? The one that isnt working has the two clips/screws broken so but the one thats working I cant work out how to get off! :(

Well, those upper screws of the foglights are a pain to access with the black plastic grille etc on. You can just about squeeze a screwdriver between foglight&grill plastic/fairing. Turns out the left foglight does not work on the right so that unit must be dead in some fashion.

So, I finally sorted this out!

It transpires that the replacement bulb I bought didnt work  , which explains why I was confused by the readings on my multimeter showing that the wiring of the car and of the foglight unit were fine.
