Basically, I can say yes. But you need to check empirically, because Volvo used few types of alternators - several types with different values of amperage for example.

Pulleys are with three or five incision. And last but not least: Different types of start of charging. There was self starting alternators and second type which need impulse to start the charging. Difference is in the number of contacts on the alternator.

Producers of alternators:

-Bosch
-Valeo
-Paris-Rhone

You can change the pulley to make it fit.

Hate to rain on anyones parade but the alternator for an aircon car has a bigger output than the alternator from a non air con.

Basically you can put an aircon alternator in any 480 but you cant put an a non air con alternator in an air con car as it has a lower current output.

Also as had been said earlier the pulleys are different and they would need to be changed over ( not a hard task ).

You're right James, I forgot that the airco alternator has a higher output then the non-airco one!
Here you can download the alternator and startermotor manual with faulttracing. I suggest you to check the brushes and voltageregulator. They can be changed without removing the alternator, costs will be something like 25 quid for a new regulator and brushes. Not a difficult job.
