Starter Motor

Post by Rachel » Mon Jan 11, 2010 8:50 pm

Hello, and Happy new year to you all.

My starter motor has been a bit slow to react in cold weather, colder it is the worse it is, but it does always start until now. Since it's been soooo damn cold it's not playing at all. I'm going to get a heater to warm it up tomorrow, and then I think it will start  (worth a try)
Anyway, I have a spare starter from my old 480....it's from an earlier model, so can anyone tell me if it will fit ok in my '95?

Thank you ;)

Hi all,
Sorry - this is not an answer to your question!

I have the same problem since the cold snap hit. Over Christmas it was starting fine, but on New years day click, click, click!

I have a 1991-92 ES special edition. I've been quoted £170 by my dealer for a new starter, but there's plenty on ebay for around £50.

My problem is that I don't know which model I need or indeed if there is a difference between the Pre 91 Bosch 9031082 to 1991 onwards Valeo 9031302.

Could anybody cast any light as to which one I would need?

thanks very much

sorry again to piggyback your post Rachel - Happy New Year!

as far as i know the difference is in the method of fixation of the starter motor.

May I suggest that the problem may not be with the starter motor, but with a less than perfect earth connection? In this weather, you need to be able to draw the maximum current from the battery & can only do this if all connections are perfect. Oh, of course, it could be the battery too.

No worries, but click click click sound more like battery to me.....when I try to start mine there is nothing AT ALL. I get the clicking when starter is free but battery is low.

My earth is good....I know it's the starter. Heating it up today worked a treat, and after charging the battery for half an hour she fired up no probs.

Hello mate...how's it going??

I'm pretty sure it is the starter. When it's cold and I turn the key there is often a pause....no sound, no clicking, nothing....then it suddenly springs into life. I spent £100 on a new battery not long ago, and the earth looks good to me. Maybe I'm wrong and I've jumped to the wrong conclusion, but how can I tell for sure??

I thought they were interchangable and earlier ones were replaced with valeo but not entirely sure... All of the gearboxes are pretty much the same?? Maybe the flywheel would be different? I think i've fitted one of the big motors to a turbo that had a dead valeo motor as a temporary measure but really cant be sure now!

Anyway, I recently bought a new starter motor from a local motor factor which was about £30. A bargain compared to the dealer prices. It was a reconditioned valeo. So maybe shop around a bit?

If the one currently fitted works, i'd be tempted to remove it and give it a clean up inside. Could just be a build up of grease / crap which is stopping it working as well as it could?
