Help! Alternator replaced now speedo doesn't work!

Post by cueman » Tue Sep 29, 2009 3:58 pm

Well, finally replaced the alternator however now the speedo has stopped working and the odometer has stopped as well.

The last time I used the car, the alternator conked out and the RAC charged the battery enough to get me home and the speedo was working normally.

Interestingly, at the same time, the engine stop warning kept on coming on although there isn't a mechanical problem - both fans work okay, no sign of steam and coolant levels are fine but after driving from cold for five minutes the flashing "STOP" warning is activated, engine temp reading 115C.

Have read through the many useful posts but am confused as to what steps I should take to rule things out or in...

Have you connected the info center earth wire again? This (I think brown-blue) wire is supposed to be connected at the B- terminal of the alternator or connected close to the alternator to the engine.

Hi, have just checked and the blue/brown wire you mention is attached to the negative side of the alternator.

The rev counter works as well - is just the odometer & speedo that is not...

Also just replaced the lambda but it hasn't cured the erratic idle& stall problem either.

Definately losing the will now!

Do you reckon something may have been knocked when the alternator was being out in?

Baffled!

speedo is getting it's signals from gearbox (diff) and you could remove the sensor, and put it back in. Also you could take a peace of metal and give some fake signals to the sensor.

Follow the black lead coming from the speedosensor. Somewhere under/next to the battery tray the're is a connector with a brown and a yellow wire. Measure the resistance from the speedosensor on the connector with a multimeter. The resistance should be between 1.5 and 3ohm.

try pushing the front of the clocks to see if the speedo works then? it might just be a loose connection somewhere.
