Rev counter working sporadically....???

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Rev counter working sporadically....???

Post by johnd » Wed Oct 01, 2003 10:18 am

Rev counter is working on and off. I know people have had this issue before so if you could let me know the remedy it would be great. I assume it may be the contacts on the back of the instruments so if someone could confirm that it would be great before I dismantle the bl$%dy thing!!

Cheers

John

Not sure if this is the same thing, but twice in the last 3 months I've spotted my revs firmly at zero whilst driving along, but a tap of the plastic screen brings it back to life. It's not dial-peel, so I assume some form of loose connection starting to happen either inside the guage itself or on the PCB to the rear...

Hi Dragon,

That's exactly it. I am meaning to do the solder points on the connectors but in this weather I can't be arsed. I am sure it is definitely that. Main problem at the moment is my rear demister which I must set aside a couple of hours to check all the wiring. It'll save all those half hours waiting in the morning!

Cheers

John

several reasons. most obvious first.
1) the cracked connectorpin weldings.
1 a) green connectorpin connection
2) the magnetically shielded gray speedo wire that is brittle (make a d tour)(for the speedo)
3) current peaks. I saw people having more trouble as there is a low voltage
4) sensor failure
luck,
JPF

I had the same problem with my speedo for a while, I fixed this problem by hitting the dash a couple of times and after that the problem has been solved (works more than a year perfect now).
I know it sounds unorthodox but it also helped me with my t.v. and my computer.

That's typically called an "engineer's fix" and is a perfectly valid way to repair TVs, PCs, Cars and pretty much anything :)

Hi John,

The problem is, that if I don't hit my computer it won't start up, e.g. it says that it cannot find any harddrives.
But fortunately my boss is very generous, so I bought a new one with the "pc prive project" (don't know the name in english)

He he - at the risk of getting you back up John (not intended), I seriously doubt that you knackered your HDD by hitting your computer, unless by hitting it you are REALLY whacking it, or picking it up and dropping it on a hard surface, and even then, it's unlikely to damage a HDD unless the heads were on the platter at the time.

Modern drives (I mean any drive made in the last 7 years really) are made to withstand shocks of between 5 and 8G, thats a hurrendous amount of force to generate that. The heads autopark within a millisecond of finishing a read/write phase, securing the head and arm out of harms way of the platter.

I used to work for Escom, making and repairing PCs and we all hit computers at time to time as part of the diag routine, and we never broke a disk (or anything else) doing it.

I suspect your HDD was probably on the virge of death already, unless you really did whallop it whilst it was on and in use?
