installing voltmeter + oilpressuremeter

Post by coyote1980 » Thu Jan 03, 2002 12:18 pm

Hi all (especially Ed),

on the previous board we had a large thread about installing a voltmeter and a oilpressuremeter in the 480. Has anyone done this now and how difficult is it to get it working?

I believe there were several oilpressuresensors and each worked only if connected to the corresponding display-unit. If you could write a nice story one day I will add it to the 480-questions part on the homepage. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
Yours sincerely,

Daniël Wilten
<IMG SRC="http://www.volvo480.nu/images/clubbansm ...

I will investigate it, and make a nice story of it.
Red Volvo 480 GT 2.0i 1995Gold Volvo 360 GL 2.0i 1987

Hi,
Iwrote about installing the gauges in a 480 on the last noticeboard and, luckily, I kept the note on file. I hope this is of some use- 2 days after installing the gauges, I busted my Achilles tendon so I have not driven the car for more than 50 mile, but they worked OK

Re: oil gauge and voltmeter fitting.
I’ve just bought a 1994 2.0 480Gt and have fitted gauges to it as in my 1988 480ES.
First, find an ES in a breaker’s yard and remove the gauge unit from the dash. It’s connected by a 6 way plug but with only 4 wires attached. Make a note of which coloured wire goes to which pin of the gauge unit for later. Next, go to the engine bay and to the left of the oil filter you will see the sender switch. It’s about 4cm across and should have a rubber cover with 2 wires coming out of it (yellow and white/black). You need this unit (remove with 19mm very slim open ended spanner, the aluminium boss it screws into and the banjo bolt that holds the boss onto the block (22mm socket). To remove this bundle of joy, remove the oil filter, then the sender, then the banjo bolt – it takes a while!
To install: Remove the plastic box in the dash where the gauge unit will go. Attached to the back of the box is a 4 wire plug. Make sure that you attach the plug to the right 4 pins on the back of the gauge unit (hence the need to record at the breaker’s yard). In the engine bay, remove the oil filter, unscrew the single connection oil pressure light switch to the left of the filter and then replace it with the aluminium boss and the banjo bolt (and sealing rings). Tighten the banjo bolt and then screw in and tighten the sender unit (with sealing ring). Replace the filter.
The sender unit has 2 different sized spade terminals. The orange wire that went to the oil pressure light switch should be attached to the small terminal. In the wiring loom, near to the orange wire, you should find a thin yellow wire that has just been bound back into the loom. This should be connected to the large terminal. (To check this is the correct yellow wire, turn on the ignition and the oil gauge will read maximum until you earth this wire when it will read zero) Make the connections permanent and off you go! My OP at tickover is just in the gap between the red and the white sectors on the gauge and this is 25psi (checked by a manual OP gauge tapped off the banjo bolt).
Sorry this is long winded but I hope that it helps someone.
Ian Bowen

installing voltmeter + oilpressuremeter

I have also installed the meters.
You have to pay attention witch oilpressuremeter you install; there are different types.
Mine would not fit near the oilfilter(2.0ltr.), but it fits on the down-backside of the engine(behind the poly-V belts a big bolt +/-size 19 or 21).Everything works fine now.

Tom

 Racing green metallic 480S 1994 2.0ltr.

Tom,
Thanks for telling us about the alternative location for the pressure switch, I didn’t know about the blanked hole round the back of the engine that you could tap into. Did you try to screw the pressure switch directly into the block round the front side? If you try to do that, the oil filter blocks everything and it only lets the little pressure-light switch (as originally fitted on 2litre engines) slide past it. If you use the aluminium spacer block and banjo bolt that the 1.7l engines have, the switch is pushed away from the block and angled upwards and clears the oil filter by just enough to work (although getting it in place takes a while). I guess it also makes wiring up a bit easier as both wires for the switch are in the loom right in front of the switch.
Ian

Unfortunately not every thing is clear to me.

I have a white connector inside the car to connect to the gauges. It has from left to right (or vice versa) a brown, grey/white, brown and yellow wire. Connecting it just opposite to the way you would expect it be connected (some plastic at the back of the unit has to be bent), results in a working voltmeter and an oil pressure meter giving maximum oil pressure. This looks good, because the oil pressure sensor has not been connected.

Now I bought the sensor and I'd like to connect it, but I can't find the right wires, I think. The 'old' sensor just for the dashboard light has a black/white wire, which is expected according to my electrical scheme. The other one should then be yellow, but where is it located?
The only loose wire I can find, is a round, black connector with an orange and brown wire in the vicinity of the alternator. I don't think this is what I need, because this wire is orange and not yellow and besides I have to cut off the black connector to be able to use this wire.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

hello boy,
I am fixing voltmeter ant oil pressure gauge in my 2.0 liter car that I took from a 1.7 l car, The captor of oil pressure gauge was fixed behind the crankshaft pulley, and it seems to be the same location for the 2.0 l engine, so i have to find where to connect the cable the 2.0 l car, and sure it will work! Many volvo 480 parts to sell like motor complete gearbox etc.... christiancamelot@hotmail.com
