day running lights ????

Do you have non standard headlight bulbs? This will cause the dash light to come one.

If it gets on your nerves just take the bulb out.

The rear quarters are dummies reflectors but you can put bulbs in them so they act as additional day running lights.

i'd guess at a fused wire running from the rear lights to a bulb holder in there ;)

I'd read that these rear lights are there because the car was originally designed with the north american market in mind - even though in the end the car was not sold there... is there any truth to this statement?

That's all true. If the car wasn't ment for the US market, the pop-ups also weren't there. The longrange lamp would have been used as mainbeam lights instead. They (designers) kept it there, so one is still able to use it as warning light to flash during daylight, when pop-ups are usualy down.

I bought a special cable with bulbholders to fit the rearside markers. It can be easily fit between the existing wires and the lightcomputer in the boot.
I discoupled the stuff after a while, because the bulbholders really doesn't quite fit the markers and constantly fell off

The additional wire has a 'two-way' connector, with wires + bulbholders for both sides coming out of it
In the boot, leftside behind the plastic interior cover, you will find a black box next to the antenna, that is the light computer
It's quite simpel, disconnect the original connector off the computer, connect the additional 'two-way' connector to the computer and than connect the original on top of that. In fact the additional connector sits inbetween the original and the computer.
I used LEDs instead of normal bulbs, 'cause 3W bulbs get too hot inthere and LEDs deliver no heat as you know

Could you tell me where I would get these special wires with the connectors?

I'm afraid these special wires aren't standard
I bought it on the internet from someone who offered this
Maybe you could fabricate such by getting the feed from the original connectors at the taillight unit.
It's a matter of 2 wires to each side
