Odometer on 480 GT

Odometer on 480 GT

Post by IronFistOfWu » Wed May 16, 2007 5:43 pm

Alright everyone, the odometer on my car has stopped working. I don't know if this is also affecting the speedometer because this has also stopped working. I think on the 480 GT it's all electronic but i have no idea where to begin. Can anyone help? [/b]

Hiya mate!

Yep,take out the instrument panel itself and unplug the 3 connectors on the back.Clean with contact cleaner, then firmly plug it back on,that normally does the trick.

Theres 2 main plugs on the back, one green and one grey, and one teeny little white 2 pin one.

I take it you know how to remove the fascia??

Thanks for the reply, but I'm afraid I'm a total noob. What is the fascia and how do I remove the instrument panel.

Haynes manual is invaluable if your planning on some car diy - but don't believe everything you read!

LOL, Haynes won't help you much here!

Look at the black plastic surround around the entire dash. Find all the screws holding it in place and take them out. Be very careful as the material it's screwed into is shocking quality and breaks easily, plus it's £180 to replace. Some harder screws to find:

1.) Behind the light switch, pull with a bit of force away from dash and it pops out.

2.) Behind the switches for the heated rear screen and foglights, again just pull unit away from dash.

3.) Take the plastic cover off where the alarm LED is, and you'll find another screw here too.

That's all I can recall at this hour, the rest I'm pretty certain are pretty obvious. Once you've got the main dash pannel out, you'll notice the Tacho/Speedo unit is screwed in on either side, remove these and out it'll pop.

Hope that helps. Should you find it unrepairable, I've got a working one I'd be willing to part with.

Just to elaborate there are 8 screws in total to take apart the dash surround.

Once you have taken that off, you will find a bit of foam covering where the contacts of the light switch (for pop-ups was), peel that back so you have a bit more space for maneouvre.

Looking right in front of you in the instrument panel with odomoter, tachometer etc. on the RHS you will find 2 screws take them out carefully and put them somewhere safe (tho do this with all the screws :) ), on the left handside the instrument panel is levered in so lift the RHS up slightly to get it out from the guard on the left.

You will need to reach around the back to feel the connectors to see if they are loose, if they feel loose push them back in as much as you can, and then see if it works, otherwise ...

Removing the instrument panel is difficult as the wires/wiring loom attached to it is short, so you will need to unattach all the wires (and they can be pretty difficult as there are latches and many connectors, just don't break any of them :) )

For this I find it easier to remove the infocentre switch and disconnect the small grey ribbon that comes from it, you will see why :)

Hope that wasn't too confusing :)
