turbo timers

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

turbo timers

Post by piper1st » Wed Feb 07, 2007 4:23 pm

I've been pondering turbo timers as other cars with turbo's have them yet i don't! Sometimes it is annoying leaving the car idling to keep the oil moving, especially if you’re in a hurry to get somewhere!

From my quick search on the net, it would appear that some Nissan timers have looms that are easily connected in line. Was the turbo timer ever a Volvo accessory, or are there any after market manufacturers who made one specifically for 400 series?

Unless i toast my car along to within an inch of my front door i never bother leaving it running.

I very much get the feeling turbo timers are just a gimick...people thinking its cool to leave the car running as they go inside.
I think they were originally designed for none water cooled turbos..the oil would be static in the red hot centre section and coke up the oilways. With the water cooling, it wouldn't be hot enough for this to happen unless the car was literally screaming right until the point you turned the engine off.

Don't let anyone tell you the turbo keeps spinning when you stop the engine, its utter trash.

Just my opinion, but also consider you might pay 30-50 quid for a second hand turbo for the 480. >turbotimer cost.

Oh - and i've only heard of one turbo die on a 480 anyway.

- AND they are illegal in the uk if activated on a public road.

I have one fitted to mine when i put the remote start alarm in it was part of the alarm system i set it up so it does not run everytime but if you blip the throttle just before you switch it off it switchs on for 2 mins. Not sure if it does any good but its a toy.

No disrespect but i dont think the 480 needs one especially as it has an after run system.

Thats exactly what i was thinking ... might look quite cool fitted in above the ashtray! ;) And might even be lucky enough for the occasional person to go "excuse me mate, you've left your engine on!"
