urgent help needed
Our mechanic has washed the engine with the result that the pop up lightsare gone completely bananas: open close, open close all the time, lights on lights off all the time. Only if you turn the fog lights on it seems to help a bit. But it is a catastrophy.
Please help!!! What can we do??

Has the engine bay had chance to dry out?

Demonic possession? Did you use Holy Water?
Sorry, I've not really got a good idea what it could be, the symptoms sound very strange. Check the DLR's, water might have got into the clusters and smashed the bulb...
Sorry I can't be more help.

Have you blamed the mechanic for it yet? He's the one that sprayed the engine, and him being a mechanic should have pointed out the danger. I mean, if you ask him to drive into a brick wall he wouldn't do it since it would be bad for the car... He's the professional and should have pointed out the risks.
I would suspect the relais is to blame. Is it only when you put the switch in the raised-headlights position or does it happen all the time?

we thought about exorcise the car....
well looking at these mad pop ups going up and down reminds me of stephen kings "Christine"!
now, seriously, we disconnected the motors from the pop ups and it helps. the lights are now permantely up but they do not act like craze anymore. Tomorrow we ll try to reconnect the motors and see if Christine has healed itself... Maybe the whole thing is drying up!
and the mechanic?? shame on him...

Well, it's almost certainly a short circuit cause by water, check your relay box isn't wet and definately check you day running lights.

we reconnected the pop up engine after three days and there was still a bit of up and downs, but much less than the first day. We had to make a 600 km trip in this car, that s why I asked for urgent help!
On the 4th day, after the 600 km we reconnected the motors again and voila, the car was fine!!!
No need of getting too excited, because yes the pop ups work, but now it is the direction lights ....

The best thing to do here is to remove the light clusters, and clean up all the contacts. Any poor connections on the sidelamps will cause the pop-ups to go mad.
I would also use silicone (dilectric) grease on all the connectors (in the entire engine bay, not just the lights). Squeeze some grease into the socket part of the connector, before fitting it back together. That will stop water geting in and keep the contacts nice and clean. The bulb holders can't be filled with grease because they can catch fire if the grease gets on the bulb.
In future don't use a high pressure hose to wash the engine bay. A strong detergent and / or detergent and a sponge. Rinsing the engine bay with a normal hose is ok, but not a strong jet of water.

Re: urgent help needed
Hi, everybody.
My 1993' 480S had exactly the same problem. The cause was water on pop-up lights circuit! Yes, I'm sure of that!
It happened twice... First time, I could not believe; the car was almost new, just finished Volvo Service maintenance (maybe on 30.000kms). Went again to garage and they solved the problem, but said nothing to me. The second time happened again, after another service maintenance. Same solution, but at that time, I asked the reason: water on some plugs of lights poping-up system. Why? Because every scheduled services, they washed the motor compartment!!!!
Best regards to all from Portugal!
