speedo sensor compatibility and testing

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

speedo sensor compatibility and testing

Post by arthuy » Tue Oct 21, 2025 7:21 pm

I have been contacted by a guy in the USA looking for a sensor for a 1989 a turbo.

I do have one from a 1992 2.0 but am sure they are different and not interchangible.

Can anyone help the guy out with a spare.

I have advised to check the wiring etc but his mechanic says its a dud sensor.

Have a look at the parts list to see if part numbers vary from year to year or engine to engine.

Have checked his VIN on Skandix and its different.

He has the M54-373E gearbox and sensor is 3413744.

Tried to talk him through testing the wiring so he will speak to the mechanic.

Would anyone have this sensor and willing to help the guy out. Looks like a lovely car and really rare in Chicago.

The guys mechanic is sure the sensor is faulty.

He gets continuity but says no AC voltage.

With the sensor connected to an multimeter and passing a metal object over it he is expecting to see a small ac voltage.

I have done that with abs sensors but not one of these sensors.

I tried this test on my good spare and I don't get a voltage.

Any thoughts ir suggestions?
