Tailgate wiring loom

Post by 480_Tink » Mon Oct 27, 2025 3:26 pm

Hi all,

Electric and 480 Newbie here. Someone has bodged the tailgate loom at least once or twice so I’m trying to work out what’s what because none of it seems to work

Main issue is the high level brake light because I can’t currently get it MOT’d until then..

I’ve trawled the internet and forums but can’t find anything at the moment.. does anyone has a wiring pin out/diagram so I know what’s going where?

Might be a matter of replacing the whole thing…

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

1 sadly common issue
2 ALL the wires are black
3 they are ALL numbered
4 I can't recall which number goes to each :(

usually they are frayed / split at the wee black rubber thing at the top of screen, I cut the rubber open and found broken within, from memory the wires are differnt colours at that point leading into it

For a 'quick' MoT fix/bodge run an extra wire from one of stop bulbs to the high(ish) level one?

You might find the other 'pukka fix' is rather long-winded/painful..........

Thanks Alan. I’ve had a look and it’s been bodged a couple times there at least! So difficult to decipher what is going there… and I’m reluctant to bodge it another time.. I think I might have to look into totally re-wiring it with new cables. With someone with no experience I’m a tad reluctant haha! But you don’t know until you try!

the wires (all) are within/under the small trim around edge of boot glass, very tight for access :(

For the MOT:
Additional stop lamps, over and above the obligatory requirements, must be tested.
But if it is not working:
Non obligatory stop lamp not working- Advisory
My tailgate brake light has not worked for years but the car passes the MOT.
