VEM guru?

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

VEM guru?

Post by ArcticTony » Thu Oct 24, 2024 3:58 pm

Is there a VEM guru I could take my car to? I’m
In East Sussex but can travel. I appreciate there are guides to help and assist but I also see that they can be a little tricky to spot poor or dry solder and I don’t have a soldering iron and would rather get it done properly first time than faffing round myself. Symptoms are, no life at the fan switch but fuse is okay.

So the blower comes on full blast but no control on the fan switch.

What does this suggest?

From what I can recall when on FULL blast the three/four way blower switch and all the 'gubbins' in the VEM are bypassed and fed from a different supply

I must confess to wimping out on any attempt at resoldering and fed the switch from the 'other supply' as the actual 'A/C unit' is toast anyway. .. . . ..

Yup, I don’t want to get into soldering either which is why I’m wondering if there is a go to person who has experience with the VEM and could diagnose and fix for me.

From memory, and it's been 20 years since I had a 480 with a VEM, they're quite straightforward to resolder.

Yup, it’s resolder time: there’s an FAQ about it on the “original” site (that people forget about!) - shall try and find time to build it into a forum FAQ

start here

Then navigate to section 30, ventilation system doesn’t work sometimes.

Thanks for this. I have seen the guide already so my plan is to share it with a local auto electrician who works on classics, hence my question about whether anyone knew of a go to guru who knew the VEM well rather than someone who doesn’t. Will see how he gets on.

Ha! I found my guru. VEM fixed and working. Toasty warm car now and all dismantled and remantled without any plastics damage too.

Onto the next jobs. 😊
