All the information you need on engine-problems is here. The engine includes the Turbo-charger, airco and everything else you'll find under the bonnet.

Well King,

as usual it all depends on
> how well the engine is maintained and
> how the engine is (mis)treated while driving
during the previous 136K ?miles?
I've got a turbolump with 178K miles experience and she still runs like clockwork. But than again perhaps I'm an exception to the rule ;)

Cambelt, gaskets decoke like you said and a normal service so plugs etc, also do the valve clearances (shims) I would have thought. If you have got the engine out any way it would probably be prudent to replace the clutch AND the thrust bearing rather than have to do it all again.
Then you can flog the rest of the bits on here!

Depends how much you want to spend. If you have all the piston rings done it becomes more of a recon engine so mileage isnt such an issue, although our volvo dealer says anyway "mileage doesn't kill Volvo's it just kills the price" which seems to be true.

funny question, comming from you. The engine (all you need) is the most reliable item on the whole car.

It went trough the door of "usine de Renault" and is as strong as a renausaur. Yust check the basic things. Them people know how to make reliable engines. Volvo how ever could learn em a thing or two in those days about "le carroserie" :D
luck,

if youre having the engine torn down , get the stuff to a machine shop just to check all clearances etc , you might not have to replace much stuff .

a good clean up of the engine will be good , piston rings might need the bores honing before replacement unless you can get oversize for a worn engine on std pistons .

definitely do the clutch , and while youre at it have the vavle seats cut and reprofiled , will be good for many a year .
