What is this!?
Does anyone know what this is? It has a narrow vacuum tube going to it.

I could be wrong (and probably am), but it looks like it might be the bit that Lee pointed out on my new 2-litre, as being the MK3 (or was it 2? - can't remember!) ABS controller. I know that it isn't in the cubby hole in the boot like it is on earlier (MK1 and 2, presumably) ABS controllers, and it was definatly a black circular thing in that kind of area under the bonet.
If you know you've got ABS, take a peek in the cubby hole in the boot to see if the controller is in there. If it's not then I'd imagine that's what it is. I was going to suggest that failing that, it could be an old alarm system that someone's fitted, but thinking about it.... an alarm with a vacuum pipe going to it?

It almost looks like it "vents" into the car. Have you got one of the air controls that adjusts where the air is directed when you press a button (like my 2.0ES with aircon has), rather than one where you adjust a slider instead (like my 1.7ES without aircon has)? If so, the vent positions are adjusted using the vacuum from the engine, so it might be that?

.... which I haven't got in my 1.7ES, and I definatly know I haven't got one of those black "things" either. I would hazzard a guess that that's what it's for then. I guess the only way to find out is to try disconnecting it, and see if you get stuck with only fresh air, or only recirculating air!

its a vacuum buffer tank, that belongs to the sytem that handles the recirc. button. the levers on the flaps of this system are handled with little vacuum cylinders
I have not seen many cars with this system. (its rare ?)
how can it be anything electrical if it only has one vacuum connection, and no wires comming out ?
luck

Well.... we came to the right conclusion in the end then!volvofox wrote: its a vacuum buffer tank, that belongs to the sytem that handles the recirc. button. the levers on the flaps of this system are handled with little vacuum cylinders
I didn't know it didn't have any wires coming out. As far as I can see, Matt didn't mention anything about wires! I was looking at the picture which he'd posted, and it appears to run very close to the wiring loom, so I assumed it was probably connected into that somehow. That's my excuse, anyway!volvofox wrote:how can it be anything electrical if it only has one vacuum connection, and no wires comming out ?

Hi Mat
You have started an intersting coversation
But three questions before i can give my ideas about this.
1- does it have a vacuumlead going out?
2- wich type of heater controls are inside the car. I mean the pushbutton
or de silde system controls?
3- does the car have the white vacuumtank near the A-post behind the
frontwing?

It has Two vacuum hoses connected (I am guessing 1-in, 1-out)You have started an intersting coversation

I have got the slider controls, but also two buttons next to the gear stick.
I havent looked for the vacuum tank yet.
It doesn't have wires comming out, one of the vacuum pipes goes to an electrical thing which can be seen next to it (I'll highlight it on the picture)how can it be anything electrical if it only has one vacuum connection, and no wires comming out ?
I didn't describe it very well before

Just as another idea, it wouldn't be the pump for the (Corsair?) fuel reclamation system, would it?
I suspect having this odd device coupled with these strange extra buttons near the gearstick is too much of a coincidence though - they surely are related?
