Turbo struggling at 70mph
Just went to test drive a Turbo... the owner only wants £250, it's worth that (sunroof + aircom!)... but, I took it on the motorway, really struggled to get over 70, and although the pressure built up I couldn't notice any boost. I've never driven a Turbo before so wasn't quite sure what to expect. What could be causing it to struggle like that tho?

As JT said, should accelerate fine upto 120 at least and quite smoothly and evenly to from memory.
Could it be something simple like a fuel problem/krypton tune req - when we went to test drive my 2.0 it coughed and spluttered like mad, but only becuase it hadn't been driven for ages - a good blast for 1/2hr sorted her out. Has this one been used regularly?
Stu.
What year is it by the way?

I'd say to the guy if he can get the problem sorted by way of a tune up etc, you'll pay the cost ontop of the asking price (but only if it's sorted of course)
Otherwise there are lots of other cheap turbo's around that aren't mint but run okay. See ebay one I PM'd you for eg?
Good luck with it anyway!

Mate, I reckon you played the evil emperor role in that saga, with your ceaseless quest for more power !martinholmesuk wrote:avoid that car!! Get one which pulls well to start with, I mean it could just be a pipe or it could be another VADER
In fact, I'm thinking of buying it and calling it Skywalker!

Did it come with FSH? Any signs of neglect?
To be honest, Vader would have been a cube ages ago if it belonged to me, especially if it'd only cost me £250 to start off.
How can I find out what is causing the top end problem?

See the ebay turbo saga in this section. Not trying to debunk the simple solutions - thay have to be tried first - mine was a gummed up turbo. Advice given to me, which worked, was to disconnect the inlet pipes and get down to the turbo inlet and see if you can spin it easily - mine didnt.

Backbox looks quite new on it... isn't the cat at the front anyway? Wouldn't want to have to replace that!!!!fargo wrote:This could also be a clogged exhaust box or catalyst.
Mine did the same, buying a new back box solved it...

My backbox looked like a new one, too. Actually, first we suspected the cat gone wrong, so I bought a used one, just to find out that the original cat is just fine. Then I left the original cat alone and swapped the 'box to a new one, which cured the problem (mostly).Brasco wrote:Backbox looks quite new on it... isn't the cat at the front anyway? Just for the records, 3rd party exhaust boxes here cost the third of the price of a factory supplied one.
