reshimming the tappets, Hot or Cold?

Not clear in the Haynes manual if the tappets are set Hot or Cold.Anyone know which it's supposed to be?

I am pretty sure cold, though it's unlikely they will need changing. All the volvo's I have had have been perfect :D
You could phone your local volvo garage and ask them.

Thanks, the local dealers weren't much help, they "think" cold. I'm having all the seats recut so they'll definately need doing. If it's wrong and it should be hot I'll soon find out!

eh i didnt think tappet systems had shims, as they ar eonly used in hydrolic lifter systems.

might be wrong though.

so are the turbo engines tappets too?

they all are. the cam lobes act dirctly on the valves, via shims to adjust the clearance

Hydraulic lifters/tappets don't have shims, the hydraulic (oil) pressure lifts them up to contact the cam.
The ones in the 480 are solid, no hydraulics, the height of the bucket is adjustable by means of a shim, or spacer, set into the top of the bucket. the clearance is therefore dependent a little on what happens when the metal expands once up to running temp.
Hydraulic buckets don't suffer from that fluctuation, and run at a theoretical minimum clearance. Provided obviously that the engine has oil in it.. :wink: if it drops low, or the pump is knackered, or, some twit has fitted a much lower viscosity "performance" oil that the engine was never designed for, then they'll produce a lovely sounding death rattle.
