What are the dying turbo symptomes?

Post by Andy440 » Thu Dec 04, 2003 1:25 pm

Hi, everybody! Please, help me to find find out what are the typical symptomes of near-to-die turbine? And what am I to do to help the turbine live longer.
I have V440 - 1.8 - manual shift - 1989 - turbo. Boost is OK (at least feel that it is), the exhaust doesn't smell oil and is rather clear. But when stepping on the accelerator to 4000 rpm it sounds like jingling. Is it typical or is it an ominous sign?
How long can it jingl until the turbine requires a profound overhault?
I usually go at 2000-2500 rpm average. Is it OK for turbo or should I go at higher revolutions?
Andy

I don't have a turbo, so unfortunatly don't know the answer to your question, but I have spotted this: eBay: Volvo 480 Turbocharger, which might be worth you keeping an eye on if the verdict from other people is that you need to replace yours.

can be anything. can be a camshaft belt or its rollers.

don't nescessary be something bad.
If youre able to record the noise with your phone, and post it here.

running an engine this high with no load is not good for it.

maybe its just some viberating piece of metal or so.

We need more info if we can state anything wise. Best post the noise, like this swede guy did a while back.

The problem - the background jingling sound only appears when I load turbocharger - when accelerating rather rapidly on the road. So, it's near immpossible to record it :((. It doesn't sound "soundly" - can make out only when listening to. My guess It can't be rollers either belt or water pump or anything viberating... Seems more like engine (as if feeded with gasoline with the octane higher than needed) or proppeler inside the turbo-charger...

Maybe there are standard symptomes of dying turbo?

By the way, from your experience, could you please tell what is a normal way to drive - concerning revolutions per minute? I have manual 5-speed shift and used to go at 2000-3000 rpm. But I've heared a full lot of opinios - from "low-turbo engines like rotating fast" to "the slower - the better"... :?
