8 mm is the size - and size matters.
I used a bit of mild steel filed down from 10 mm sqaure and twisted through 15degrees before the 10mm spanner broke.

I then resorted to buying a sump plug spanner, 8mm/13mm sqaure and eventually with a longer lever got if off.

Found out it was so tight because under the sump is slightly uneven so the previous owenr/maintainer had done it extremly tight to ensure the copper washer was compressed to make an oil seal.
Tonight I have created a fibre/copper washer composite in the hope of making a good seal without horrendous torque. Yes its the ebay turbo again.

Local motor factors said square sump plug spanners were hard to come by but Halfords had them in stock and it all worked a treat!!!
