Turbo lag

Post by chriskay » Sat Nov 29, 2003 6:24 pm

I've heard it said that a turbo with auto. box doesn't suffer from turbo lag. I can't notice any lag on mine, when flooring the throttle so the turbo gauge goes to the end of the orange. Can anyone explain?

My auto Turbo (Subaru, not Volvo) was auto, and Lag free.
My theory is that Auto's change gear quicker, and at higher revs, so the turbo doesn't have time to slow down.

I hate turbo cars WHITOUT turbo lag. Their just like bigger engine's. you don't know its there. I like the blow in the back, a modern turbo car lacks.

Well, um the modern turbo's have that 'blow in the back' too, they just don't leave you powerless if you let the revs drop below 3000rpm. Driving a turbo is very different to driving a N/A, with a turbo, you need to be far more rpm conscious.
The only turbo's that don't give you a shove are things like the LPT (Low pressure Turbo's) such as in some Saabs etc.

I do understand what you mean though, I loved having 280BHP on tap with 4wd to boot! but I actually swapped my Subaru for my N/A 480

this is not the same. I hate modern turbo's.
any way I drive "the italian way. Ever heard of dropping some gears back to have whatever rev you like(and so what ever turbokick) in whatever speed ?

Any way, I steer like a ag. machine op. I steer with one hand only and keep the gearshiftlever loose in the hand at all times, so i shift a lot... :)

Yer lucky then!

My car nearly stalls if you try to race off the lights, the turbo doesn't kick in for a good couple of seconds... Only way to avoid the near stall, is to blip the accelerator just before you try to floor it, or keep the revs above 2500 beforehand, which of course gives the game away, especially in my car :(

Hopefully this will be fixed on my car soon though by having new acellerator pedal switches etc etc - oh and that MegaSquirt doobry ;)
:hopping:

Dragon, please explain; what switches & doobry? Mine's like Martin's; turbo kicks in immediately. 0-60 is just under 9 seconds. Is this typical?

Sorry, I was being slightly funny/ironic about calling megasquirt a doobry as if I wasn't sure what it was - I've been waiting a long time for it to arrive you see, but a little bird says we may be very close to MS day :D

As for the switch - I refer to the throttle switch, which may be faulty or dirty on my car, but this is getting replaced soon anyway, so fingers x'd this all adds up to no more lag

Your car shouldn't be on the verge of stalling form the lights. Whilst it whon accelerate at its full rate until the turbo cuts in, in should still perform much the same as a N/A 480. Perhaps you need more fuel pressure.

Mat,

It's because of all his mods and stuff. Gaz is waiting for MS so then he will be OK to kill everyone at the lights ;) When we went to Alton Towers he was fighting hard to keep up with me. Soon he will be a dragon again :hopping:
