the silver one is probably sandblasted, like my friends car. the ones with the round, tube like manifoild have no turbo.
Maybe you can refer better to the parts catalogue, there is probably an answer to your question. there is a link on the clubsite , if you want it downloaded.

No, i'm sure there are 2 types as king_j first suggests. Have no idea why. They seem to have changed at '92. But as volvovox says, if it just the colour you dont like, then have it blasted. A friend of mine did his his with a wire brush! Looked fine.
Suppose thats the change between a mkI and II. I know the clutch is bigger on the later from my recent experience... Other than that i dont know??
You should probably be asking what differences there are between the MKI's and MKII's cos i have no idea...

LOL Sandblasted!!!! LOL
Black is pre 1992
Silver is 1992 onwards.
It reflects the different engine type of the turbo of which there are 3 in total.
If it's a black manifold it's MK 1, you can also tell by the idle valve where the valve pipes will be at a 180 % angle.
MK2 will be silver and the idle valve pipes will be at a 90 % angle.
MK3 engine, there is a brake servo and the abs resevior is small and yellow.
There are other differences in pipping and the air recirc but those are the main ones visible.

ABS was standard on the turbo for all U.K cars although this is not the case with our european cousins.
You can tell, open the boot and open the left hand box space at the back and in there should be the silver abs brain computer.
