Post by catgroom » Mon Mar 21, 2005 8:06 pm

Hi!

I was hoping someone will be able to help me with regards to shimming tappets.....

I dont see it written about on our Forum so I was hoping someone may be able to post a "How to"

I know that if it is neglected your valves can bounce like buggery and naff yer engine,so fairly important I thought........

It's not that easy. You also need the shims, it's better to let a VOlvo specialist do it, as they have all the tools needed to thake the shims out and fit new ones.

You can do it with a couple of flat screwdrives, and two people. Best find a friend who isn't too woried about fingertips though! Because if the screwdrives slip, then fingers in the way will get hurt.

I guess you can get a tool from somewhere to hold the tapet down, while the shims are taken out, but it's likely to cost more than a garage will charge.

It only cost £80 when I had formula do mine. It only needed 2 replacing, and the engines done 173k now...
They would have lent me the tool, but I really couldn'r be arsed, because you've got to take it all apart, measure up and calculate, and then go and get the right ones.....tricky cos your car will have no inlet manifold or rocker cover, or indeed any tappets!

Right, well, assuming Im a bit thick here ( :D !),are there any warning signs that they are in need of doing.I say this as theres the injectors that tick and the usual slight tappety noise which on my 2 started at 75-80k

Or the lazy way. is to replace the cambelt at the same time, measure all the clearances, pop the cambelt off, pop the cam out, measure all the shims, you may find some swap round, and then put required shims in, refit camshaft, refit cambelt.

Thats how i do it benji...had lots of fun with my panda, had camshaft reprofiled, so had to put spacers under the shims, which were innitially too soft and got thinner with time. Eventually got it all sorted.

I had 24 shims to play with though, and i still had to buy 3.

What was it with pandas and tappets, they really did need them checked regularly, i know the 4x4 had special profile cams to help them get a bigger torque figure, and i used to adjust those at least once every six months.

That 4x4 of mine used to go anywhere, awesome little car, shame they rust so badly.

I like the cam off idea. So when you need to buy new shims, do you just tell volvo or whoever what sizes you need or can you buy like a selection box of shims or summink? Can i not just use 2p?

At that point mail order is quiet easy as you know what sizes you require.

You could use 2p pieces for the first few miles of your journey, and then the AA recovery service for the rest.

Agreed, i can tell you horror stories about shimming, and this was with stainless steel, much harder than 2p alloy.
