Post by stu » Mon Nov 17, 2003 9:13 pm

Help, I get a smell of petrol when I park up, (well thats when i notice it), Also it seems the fuel tank gets pressurised as when i undo the filler cap i hear (and smell) a release of pressure!? any idea's? I find it hard to believe that this is normal.

Your 480 might be one of the ones with the (was it called corsair?) petrol reclamation system, which sucks the petrol vapour back from the injectors into a holding tank when you stop - I don't know too much about this system, but possibly it has a small leak in a pipe, or a breather pipe is letting some vapour out? Just an idea really :dunno:

can be anything. I thing the system is clogged. I have a system that sucks petrol vapour ot of the tank. There is also a big carbon filter in front of the RH F wheel, accesable from the bottom, behind some plastic panels. One doesn't know its there, but it might. It isn't really visible, since it is so build in.

A tip I could give you is to study the parts catalogue, on how your tank system is build up. and find out why your tank isn't breathing propperly (filter clogged? ) maybe you find a bent, and choked hose or so. The partscatalogue is downloadable: there should be links on the clubsite.

I'd suggest, next time you smell the smell, keep the engine running and pop the bonnett and look for a leak. If there is a leak, chances are it won't look too 'wet' as it'll be evaporating quickly on hot pipes, but check around the fuel pressure regulator (above the distributor), pull some pipes around and follow them. In my experience, if you smell fuel, there is a leak. Best find it before you burn your pride and joy!

Yep i agree with the above.
My brothers turbo also had a petrol smell and it turned out a fuel line was cracked and leaking. Very dangerous. Check it out asap.

Hi,

My old ES produced a petrol smell, I found out it was the leaking from around the fuel filter. The pipes had split at the ends and needed to be re-cut to make a better seal.

Good luck

Take a lighter and carefully move the flame around the car, when you hear a loud "woof", you have found the leak!!!

You can download the parts manual from here (57MB), courtesy of Dragon's hosting. Check out his website while your there as he has other useful stuff too! :D

For spares that are cheaper than Volvo's spares department, try Euro Car Parts or German Swedish & French Car Parts (GSF).
