180F thermostat
Hi , i must say i am a bit confused about the 180F thermostat theory. The thermostat opens at 92C and 89C for the turbo while the above opens at 82C.If you install the 180 thermostat then the operating temp of the engine is dropped right? But volvo has made the engine to operate in a certain temp range, so what could the results be(see piston rings)?According to the haynes manual :radiator cooling fan thermal switch 1st stage opens at 95C and second stage opens at 101C.1st stage closes at 90C and second stage closes at 96C.So what IS the operating temp range?

My engine temp runs between 85 and 100 (the fan really kicks in at around 100 and quickly takes it back to 85ish)
Cheers!

Hi to all!!!
It is more than sure that 480s are not the same in terms of the fan motor and the temp sensors..
Firstly I ve seen in the most recent models that the fan motor is different from the old ones..moreover, it is faster (more circles a minute) lasts less (temp sensor) as well as the cooler liquid is more than 7 liters which means latger radiator...
I used to have the older engine the 1721 non turbo and the fan was kicking at 92 degrees celcius..it was taken 4 minutes to decrease the temp downto 86c...Now I m driving a turbo one (engine year 91) and the fan kicks at 95 or 96 depends on the amount of the parafly (green cooler liquid)....if the liquid is at normal levels in the tank the fan kicks at 95 if it is a bit less then starts at 96 (there is a small leakage---dont know where it is though). It takes 7 or more minutes for the temp to decrease to 87 c.....the more recent models works much different.....The temp is at constant levels in all circumstanses...
Be aware in mind that the turbo engines produce higher temperatures, also the location (colder countries up north, souther parts of Europe are much hotter specially on summer times----here in Greece all cars suffers on summer 42c)...
As for the oil temp it depedens only on how u drive the car...if u r in a fast lane the oil temp may rize up to 118 degrees with the highest point (where the trip computer says CHECK) 140c...Normal rate for the oil at 140 km/h constantly is 109 to 115 degrees c...at that speed the coolant temp is between 90 to 97 and then back to 90c...when of course not using airconditioning..when the airco is on then coolant temp rizes upto 100 to 103 c.....Here is the big difference on the recent models (93 and upwards)...the coolant temp when the airco is on never goes more than 96
in the city is something like 90 to 95
