Oil in my Distributor Cap

Post by James Paul » Thu Oct 30, 2003 9:52 am

Can anyone help me on this one?

I have to clean out my distributor cap every so often as it gets oil deposites all over it.

Has anyone had this problem or knows how to solve it? I have posted this before but it was right before we changed over to the new forum, and can't find much about it in the old one.

Thanks

James

Hi James,

The problem is the camshaft seal has gone.

When this happens oil drips into the dizzy cap from the end of the cam. I dont know how simple a job it is to change.

Gerrsvolvo or DBSVolvo will be able to tell you.

Repair : distributor cap

Past few weeks my Blue Bell became more and more reluctant to respond to the accelerator and in the end she refused to respond at all
We managed to reach a parking lot near Apeldoorn close to the highway and called the ANWB for assistance. When the man arrived he quickly discovered the source of all our troubles The distributor cap was full with oil because the gasket almost gone. When everything was cleaned with a cloth I phoned my mechanic straightaway and made arrangements for a repair the next day and continued my journey back home.

Thanks Jamo,

I did guess that was where it was coming from, but looks a bit time consuming to replace it.

The thing is that she seems to run perfectly, nice and smooth, maybe only a little judger if i take my foot off the gas at low speed. I imagined that the oil would make a bigger difference than it has?

I'll wait for the other guy's to explain. I would prefer to do it mayself, as i have fallen out with my local so called 'expert'!!!!!

thanks

J.

James (or is it paul?)

I had to do it on my old 480 2.0 es

its quite easy, just follow the instructions in the haynes manual.

You'll need a new seal from Volvo unless Euro Car Parts or German & swedish do them, along with new rotor arm & cap.

Basically you drill a small hole in the metal part of the seal & screw in a self tapping screw. Grip the screw with a pair of pliers to pull the seal out.

You can try levering it first but it probably won't work.

Thanks Dave,

Can you remember what price you paid for the seal, want to make sure I am not over charged?

cheers
