What Oil?

Do you use in your cars, I just bought 5 - 30W, is that ok?...I haven't changed the oil yet..

if thats ful synthetic ( i believe so) than it is said you cannot use any other oil anymore.

I use half synthetic 10 W 40

this is half synthetic, its the grade I am concerned about..would 5- 30w be ok?...it is good oil.

A couple of months ago I changed to Castrol GTX. Does this mean I should not use any other oil now?

You should be using 10w40 or 15v40 ideally.
Look in your Volvo handbook for the diagram showing the various oil grades and how each effect the 480.

5w is is too thin in reality.

I'm using Castrol GTX magnatex 10w40

Hi!!

I use a 10-60 full synth....perhaps i should go back to a full synth 15-50

actually I dont know the effects on the engine..the mechanic said that anything from 10-40 and upwards is ok to use for the turbo engine...

A good quality 10W40 is fine. No point in using expensive fully synthetic oil becasue the 480 doesn't have a high performance engine. Unlike japanese cars which have a shorter stroke and are higher revving (that's how they get their power).
You can indeed go back to mineral oil after using fully synthetic. The theory that you cant is an urban myth.

Can i just add, that you can but you must flush the engine first and if you change the grade of oil you must do the same.

Car is in being serviced now, I bought Castrol GTX magnatex 10w40 and the Bosch Spark plugs...waiting to see if there is any difference.

No probs mate.

If you've bought the Bosch Super 4 plugs your car should be really smooth and responsive to drive.

Thats the ones Bosche Super 4's, I agree, they do make a smoother ride and better response, idle seems to be happier too. Full service, two tyres and tracking Â£130...plus the extra for the better plugs and oil...not too bad!!

Just to say it has been a RESULT with the Castrol GTX and the Bosche 4 point plugs, the car runs nice and smooth...love it!!!

Best car i have had!!!!.....of course you all knew that already!!

Wasn't slick 50 one of those amazing discoveries (It's amazing Mike!) products where they, in the commercial, started a frozen engine which had no oil or something?

The way I see it, when the engine was built it was designed for the oil of the time. Adding Slick 50 etc. 5W/30 oil etc. wont give you any greater protection than a regular 10W/40 oil change. It will also save you an extra cost.
