Oil leak

Just noticed an oil leak. Seems to be coming from half way down the block, at the rear near the cam belt housing, possibly from behind it. The cam belt looks dry.
Does anyone have any ideas what seal has gone before I get my local Volvo indy to take a look.

It isn't unusual for there to be an oil leak from the gearbox, as the seals in the Renault box do perish over time. It's worth getting under the car if you can & doing a visual check with an inspection lamp, before concluding where it might be originating from. Oil obeys the laws of gravity just like all other liquids, ad where it comes out / to ground might just be the bottom of the track. Worth a look 😉

I have a persistant 'weep' from the area around the drive for the oil pump, (just aft of the cam belt, near-ish starter) I never actually got to the root, although I suspect it's an easy fix ? ??

(as long as the engine is on the bench) :hopping:

I think JKM has posted some images?

Small druibbles are not any concern,, it protects the underside from rusting.....

although having the cam-shaft seal blow out on way home (on SS1) was a touch excessive  (especially as it is galv chassis and GRP)

Hi Martin,
Mines an Auto (Will have to update my signature) so it's a ZF box. The oil is black ish, so definitely engine.
I'm going to get under it when I get the time to have a further look.

Hi Alan,
Thanks, I'll have a look at the oil pump to see if it's from that area. I've sprayed some engine degreaser and cleaned the area I saw and then taken the car for a spin for about 30 miles but the oil has not come back as yet. Am going to use it a bit more this week so hopefully I'll be able to see where it's coming from.

Roy

type this into the search bar

Aux Shaft Plug

and it will give you the correct section, about 30 odd photos into the thread :-)

Thanks Alan.
I shall take a look this evening and see if I can see the Plug.

Alan,
Is this the plug in question? I thought it would be a solid flat top, but instead it appears to be conical with a cross in the middle.

aye , I reckon it is, not easy to access with the engine in place,

I think Jay Kay explained how he fixed it, but his engine was on the bench/floor

Cheers Alan.
I've just managed to get a ring spanner on the 2 bolts and tightened them 1/2 to 3/4 turn each so hopefully that should nip it up a bit.

I'll need to investigate then, always assumed to 'difficult'

The torque of the bolts has little to no effect on the seal clamping force as the O-ring lives in a bore.

I say O-ring... if its 30 years old it will be a rock solid D-ring!

If you still have an oil leak, don't disregard this as the source because its been nipped up.

Its a 10p O-ring... get it swapped out!

Talking of oil leaks... make sure your turbo oil supply pipe hasn't rotted out where its secured to the exhaust manifold. Extremely rare they pin-hole but it has been known. As the years march by, this risk only increases for the 20 or so cars that have survived! Ultimate fire risk if so

Hi Jay,
I'll take it off and replace the O ring at some point, I've got plenty in the garage.
I'm not sure where the oil is coming from yet, I'll have to take a good look over the weekend but thanks for heads up o the turbo oil feed pipe, I'll be sure to check that.
