engine mounts on their way out?

Hi all,

I think my engine mounts are on their way out. Sometimes when I let of the clutch a little to far the dashboard starts shaking itself to pieces and the steering wheel vibrates. Also when accelerating the gear stick reminds me of a rattle snake's tail (which I think is another indication of worn mounts) Does anybody know where I can get some, and if they are difficult to fit?

Thanks.

Oh dear! Pretty much the only one that fails is actually the gearbox mount on the later cars. Although, mine did exit hibernation with a ripped front engine mount but I have no idea how this could have happened— maybe it was jacked wrong?

The later cars have a more refined but weaker design of gearbox mount. For years, there was no stock and no solution but recently JKM has worked out how to put a cheap Citroen one to use with a small modification. So, you should be alright.

P.S. you can’t install the earlier more robust mount as Volvo modified the subframe shape between designs… unless you are a legend like Alan, this is how he got around the problem, by welding the correct shape in.

The Volvo part number is 3466003, although good luck finding one!

Skandix sell their own 'interpretation' of it under part no. 1079786, and I have no doubt that Jeff will be along in due course to explain the interesting backstory of it (don't buy anything yet).

Changing it may or may not be possible on the front drive depending on what you have available - engine and gearbox sit on their mounts (the front one is probably fine), mounts sit on the subframe, so with an elaborate setup of jacks and stands it might be possible to lift the engine enough to get the rear mount out and a new one in, depending on the clearances.

All that said, a shaking dashboard seems to have been a feature of every 480 I've driven, so a new mount may or may not solve that.

EDIT: Also what James said - got his post in first whilst I was typing mine :D

There are other things that cause judder even with the best engine mounts - a flywheel that needs a skim, contaminated clutch friction surface or busted friction plate cush-springs.

Get in there with a pry-bar, or get some mates to grab and yank the engine back and forth, whilst a below observer checks where the play is.

Once you have visually condemned a mount, then you can research which one you need to get hold of as they are different front & rear.

Also don't forget the upper engine mount gas spring. Looks like a big fat tailgate strut. If its original, it's likely to be toast.

Scamming Dicks? They triumphantly announced their "new" engine mounts about a month after JK had posted his post about the C5 mount.
You know what 115 Euro gets you?

Yup..... a modified C5 mount.

For reference, the mount in the UK, is about £20.........

I'm also quite certain that if you asked JKM very nicely he could look in his "nerds guide to engine mounts" book and compare freelander 1 engine mounts with Volvo 480 front gearbox mounts.....

It's a PDF somewhere on my old laptop. Let me try and find that.

EDIT

It's still online here from Corteco. Pictures start from page 497...

Everyone's made really pertinent points here Will, to which there's really little I can add.

But looking right back to your original post two questions came to mind:

1. How old (in terms of mileage if nothing else) is the clutch? Just about anything in a 480 can make the dash rattle and shake, and if the clutch is worn and not taking up smoothly.....

2. Is the floppiness there in the gear stick all the time? If so the bushes where it joins the rod beneath the car may be worn...

Just thoughts!
