All the information you need on engine-problems is here. The engine includes the Turbo-charger, airco and everything else you'll find under the bonnet.

Replacement (?) Rear Silencer

Post by yorkievolvo » Mon Aug 22, 2022 7:37 pm

My Robou’d 480 turbo auto failed the MOT on several counts which I'm working through.
One I thought easy to fix was a corroded exhaust rear silencer. However, after spending hours trawling the Internet, I’ve come to the conclusion that such an item is unobtainium, so I’m considering installing a basic item and using flexible piping to cover any lining-up problems. Now I ask a simple (?) question (and hope I get a simple answer) - can I actually install a cheap, standard silencer without affecting performance tooooo much?

these?

:D

The silencer is the same across all 480's, even the turbo

(apologies for the multi-post, the forum temporary bans you if you try posting too many ebay links in a single post!)

Thanks jifflemon.
Your last post was most illuminating.
I had checked all the places you indicated.
However, whenever I performed the 'comparability' check, all returned as 'Not suitable for a turbo (or words to that effect).

I’m going to put my neck on the block here!

I believe the Turbo rear box is different as the B18FT uses a slightly larger pipe diameter.

Nothing stopping you purchasing the silencers listed and performing a very slight diameter modification mind.

I too have noticed all the Turbo rear boxes slowly vanishing. So much so, I purchased one two years ago which is now currently sitting in my loft in case I have to go back to OE.

No neck/block interference required.

I would say “back in the day” there was a difference. Once they’re passed the 10 year marker, things start to become much more generic….

I've ordered the cheapest item (it only needs to last a year or so).
As my garage is only a 'parking' one, the local garage will be asked to install it.
I'll let you know how much cussin was involved.
Thanks.

Below is an excerpt from the 2022 Klarius Catalogue...

Image

Rear box connection diameters as stated :

B18FT = 53mm into female 53.5mm
B18FP = 45mm into female 45.5mm
B18ED = 46.5mm into female 47mm
B20F = 48 into female 48.5mm

As I thought, the Turbo has a considerably larger diameter even in the 2022 aftermarket - even larger than the greater engine capacity 2 litre!

It is the 53mm Turbo rear box "VO171D" that Yorkie is struggling to find.

I stand by the comment that there may be connection diameter issues if you go for a non-B18FT rear box - but that all depends if you have the correct centre section fitted!

Like most things 480.... grab whatever parts you can that look even remotely the same! I'd recommend the 2.0 box as the pipe diameter is the closest - which covers your original concerns about power losses. The only other option is custom made and this forum has mixed stories of that route.

Good luck and lets hope no more than normal levels of 480 cussin' during fitment :rofl:
