Random stalling
Hello Guys I'm in desperate times with the problem I'm having. The RPM of my 2.0 decreases to a point where it might stall sometimes. This only happens when I clutch and, for example, have to wait at a red light. I decrease my speed and clutch, then the RPM's will bounce between 600/1200. 90% it won't stall but when I activate my airconditioning the RPM will further decrease and the engine stalls 50% of the time. Braking and stearing also seem to be a trigger because when I put it in neutral, whilst rolling out, and want to steer it up my driveway this also seems to happen(without AC on). After the 3 seconds of bouncing it seems to stable itself.
Normally it idles reasonable around 1000 and really minor jumps. I've already cleaned the, I think you call it a MAF, and that seems to be okay. The alternator has the right values when idling, using the brakes and AC didn't affect it, nor the battery. After stalling it will start immediately.

I'd start by looking at the micro switches on the throttle body in particular the one that operates as you come off the idle stop. This is the one that tells the idle air bypass valve to operate.
Put your ear to the throttle body. When you open the throttle the tiniest amount, you should hear the switch click.
And vacuum leaks, although these would make the fault pretty continuous, not intermittent like you have.

I'll check that out. The problem is driving me mad. I'm still thinking it is a electrical problem because of the randomness in it.
Could it belt related? I don't hear it slip but I am nearing the intervaldate.

You might get lucky. Had the same symptom and it turns out that a pipe was dislodged in the engine bay.

I don't think so, it was a vacuum pipe.

Have you double checked the basic things as well:
- is the Idle Control Valve clean?
- is the throttle valve housing clean?
- what state are the distributor cap and rotor arm in?
Also, do you know there is a very primitive but nonetheless effective error code store on these cars? You'll find info on here or the main site about the codes and how to read them using the reader on the LH front suspension pillar. Or people on here will advise you if you can't locate it. That might give you a clue as well...

I have had the same problem, replaced the idle control valve completely and the stalling stopped. Get them cheap here:

Replacement is a 5 minute DIY job.
But the real problem in my case came from the fact that cilinder #2 had almost no compression left. I would recommend having the compression of all cilinders measured.

Doubt if you can get a code reader to plug in (well James I think bought one)
it is VERY basic and you count flashes of the LED then look it up
I've had similar, and I'm with James, check that the throttle switch under the throttle is working, it can get filled with oil form above , ie any oil breathing through the crankcase tends to run down throttle body shaft into switch, or the small pipe across from front of manifold to sensor at windscreen wiper motor, it can split (it was on ours) as already suggested by frenchfries
