Won't Start, fuel pump working + Sparks

Post by Nick1307 » Tue May 15, 2018 8:13 pm

Hi All,
Having replaced the seized fuel pump and fitted a new fuel filter we have fuel to the injector bar. New spark plugs, HT leads and distributer cap fitted.
Car truns over with fleeting signs ignition but nothing really. Sprayed a little brake cleaner up the air intake and get a few seconds of what sounds like perfect running on all 4 cylinders. The car hasn't ran since 2010, would the injectors have clogged up? or have I missed something? Any guidance would be much appreciatted, thank you in advance. Nick - 1.7 ES May 1989 vintage

Yes, the injectors could be clogged in theory. I've had them out on two 480s now and the changes in running is noticeable, especially the idle. I think it would be unlikely that all four have clogged to allow no fuel through at all. Maybe leave that for later. I would have thought if they were blocked the car would run a bit but badly with an imbalance of fuel between cylinders.

However, it won't run with a broken MAP sensor. This is the Manifold Air (or Absolute) Pressure sensor which is mounted above the brake master cylinder and is connected to the intake manifold with a small hose. They are nothing special or unique to the 480 and are used on loads of cars. If you need one you will get one very easily and cheaply.

Measure the resistance of that and check the pipe hasn't perished and get back to us. In the mean time I'll try and find out what the resistance should be!

My car hadn't started for 20 years and this was the culprit. I was lucky in having another identical engined 480 with me to swap parts on. It did exactly what your did and would run for about one second at the most.

If you have Renault, Volvo or Vauxhall to hand, open the bonnet and see if this sensor is in there. It will take you a few seconds to swap it for troubleshooting purposes.

Where abouts are you?

New MAP fitted - And she has started, initially on 2 cylinders, then 3 and after 5 mins 4 + the rev counter worked too. The work towards the MOT can begin without delay - Thank you to everyone that have helped me get this far. :hopping:
